Obtaining citizenship of Sierra Leone

This is a visa issued to foreign citizens who want to live in the country. It is usually issued for a period of one year and is renewed annually. A residence permit may be issued for any of the following reasons:

Employment
Business, including for self-employed persons
For students
For dependents.

Residence permit for dependents

This can be a spouse, partner, children, or family members. Foreign nationals who have entered Sierra Leone for assistance/care of dependents, like other categories, must apply for a residence permit if they wish to stay in the country longer than the usual three months after entry. A foreign citizen with a residence permit for dependents does not have the right to use it for employment or other economic activities.

Is dual citizenship allowed in Sierra Leone?

Under the Sierra Leone Nationality Act of 1973, dual citizenship was not allowed. However, this was changed by Section 5 of the Amendment Act 2006, which provides that a citizen of Sierra Leone may hold citizenship of another country in addition to his Sierra Leonean citizenship. This now enables the people of Sierra Leone to access basic rights granted by both countries of origin and host countries.

The process of issuing an ordinary passport

You need to purchase an application form to obtain a passport.
Fill out the passport application form correctly and send it together with the relevant supporting documents.
After the Immigration Department receives the application, a decision about the applicant's nationality/citizenship and whether or not the applicant will be invited for an interview will be made. If an interview is not required, the applicant will be asked to make a payment and take biometric data (fingerprints).
