Ghana transit visa.

A Ghana transit visa is issued to travelers whose itinerary includes a stopover on the territory of Ghana. Foreigners making direct air transit are exempt from visa requirements. The traveler must have a valid visa for the next destination and the right of entry to the country to which he/she is transiting. The Ghana transit visa is valid for 48 hours.

Documents required for a transit visa to Ghana.

1. Microchip for pets

Your pet must be microchipped ISO 11784/11785 before entering Ghana. Microchips are the best way to identify pets.

2. Vaccination

Dogs and cats must be vaccinated against rabies no earlier than 30 days and no more than 12 months before entering Ghana. Dogs, cats or ferrets traveling from Ireland, Malta, Sweden, Ireland and the UK do not need to be vaccinated against rabies, although it is recommended.

Dogs entering Ghana must have proof of vaccination against canine distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, Leptospira canicola, Leptospira icterohaemorrhagiae and parainfluenza.

Cats should be vaccinated against feline panleukopenia, feline rhinotracheitis and feline calicivirus.

3. Blood tests

Your dog must test negative for the following diseases: Brucella canis, serum agglutination/Giemsa smear, Trypanosoma evansi Card Agglutination test and/Gemsa smog, Babesia gibsoni Giemsa smog, Dirofilaria immitis Microfilaria filtration test, Leishmania spps. Indirect fluorescent antibody test or ELISA or direct agglutination test.

4. Import permit

Importing pets into Ghana requires an import permit from the Veterinary Service.

5. Health certificate

A USDA (or CFIA) accredited veterinarian must complete a veterinary certificate for Ghana for USDA or CFIA approval if you are traveling from the US or Canada. If you are traveling from outside these countries, the forms must be certified by your country's governing body responsible for the import and export of animals.

6. Import permit

An import permit is required when entering Ghana with your own pet. The application should be submitted after the blood test. The permit is valid for 8 weeks after issuance.

7. Treatment from ticks and tapeworms

Treatment for ticks and tapeworms is not required before entering Ghana, but is recommended due to availability.

8. Entry into Ghana by air

Pets must enter Ghana through Kotoka International Airport. Pets may arrive in the aircraft cabin as checked baggage or air cargo. All domestic dogs and cats must be free of signs of human-transmissible diseases when inspected at the airport of entry. If the dog or cat is not completely healthy, it is necessary to undergo an additional examination by a licensed veterinarian.

9. Puppies and kittens

Unvaccinated puppies and kittens under the age of 3 months can enter Ghana, but only from rabies-free countries - Malta, Sweden, Ireland and Great Britain.

10. Prohibited breeds

Ghana does not publish a list of prohibited breeds.

11. Other animals

Birds, invertebrates, tropical fish, reptiles, amphibians, mammals such as rodents and rabbits are not subject to a rabies vaccination requirement, but may be subject to other requirements and must have a health certificate for entry into Ghana Pet owners are strongly advised to seek further information from the relevant authority in their country and/or destination country

If you are driving in Ghana, you must have a valid Ghanaian driver's license as a citizen or an international driver's license as a foreigner.

Important reminders:

• Driving in Ghana is on the right side of the road.
• The minimum driving age is 18 years.
• A seat belt is mandatory.
• A children's device is a must.
• Speakerphone is a must. Keep phones as far away as possible unless they are hands-free.
• Drink responsibly. The legal limit of alcohol is 80 mg per 100 ml of blood.
• The speed limit is 30 km/h in cities and 80 km/h on most highways.
• Make sure your car always has early warning devices, a fire extinguisher, a spare tire and a first aid kit.
