A foreign national wishing to enter PNG must obtain a visa at one of the PNG diplomatic missions, unless they are a citizen of one of the countries eligible for an e-visa. All visitors must have a passport valid for at least 6 months.
Visa on arrival
The visa on arrival service is currently suspended.
eVisa
Starting from November 2018, citizens of all countries eligible for a visa on arrival can also obtain a 60-day eVisa. The 30-day eVisa is also available to citizens of the following countries:
Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Botswana, China, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, India, Jamaica, Kenya, Lesotho, Mauritius, Namibia, Russia, Rwanda, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Seychelles, South Africa, Trinidad and Tobago, Vietnam, Zambia.
This is by far the most efficient way to obtain a permit to travel to the country, as it eliminates the need to personally visit the nearest diplomatic mission or wait in long immigration lines to apply for a visa to Papua New Guinea upon arrival at the border.
Once approved, the Papua New Guinea e-Visa is sent to the traveler by email and can then be printed to present to border authorities upon arrival.
To obtain a Papua New Guinea e-Visa, applicants must meet the necessary requirements.
Applicants must fill out an online application form with their details and provide the following items:
- A passport issued by an eligible sovereign state with a minimum validity of 6 months from the date of arrival in the country and at least one page stamped with PNG entry
- A copy of the main page of the passport, which includes the name of the person, date of birth, citizenship, passport number, date of issue and validity of the passport, as well as the applicant's signature
- Active email account for receiving eVisa
- Payment method (credit or debit card)
The passport used to fill out the online Papua New Guinea visa application form must be presented at the border control along with the e-visa to enter the country.
If the passport used to apply is lost, stolen, damaged, or otherwise invalidated, the traveler must re-apply using their new passport.
Obtaining a visa at the embassy or consulate of the country
Citizens of other countries must apply for a Papua New Guinea tourist visa at the country's embassy or consulate. The visa application should be submitted to the embassy well in advance of travel to allow sufficient time for processing.
The protocol for obtaining a consular or embassy visa for an independent state initially involves making an appointment at the nearest diplomatic government office of Papua New Guinea in the country where the traveler resides.
During this process, you will need to fill out a Papua New Guinea visa application form and bring a number of supporting documents to the embassy for an interview. The required documents will depend on the type of visa to the embassy that the person needs.
You will also need to pay the PNG tourist visa processing fee at the embassy before the application is processed.
