ORDINARY VISA (SINGLE-ENTRY VISA)
This visa is issued to foreign citizens for the purpose of visiting, tourism, recreation, vacation, participation in a conference, humanitarian and charitable activities, family visit,
treatment, or any other purpose that may be determined by the issuing authority. The validity of the visa does not exceed 90 days for a single entry.
MULTIPLE-ENTRY VISA
A multiple-entry visa can only be issued to US citizens (due to bilateral agreements between Tanzania and America) who wish to come for leisure or tourism purposes, as they are not eligible for a regular visa.
This means that US passport holders visiting Tanzania for tourism or leisure MUST apply for a multiple-entry visa, even if they arrive on a single entry.
A multiple-entry visa may also be issued to directors of companies incorporated in Tanzania who are not resident in Tanzania, persons participating in bilateral meetings, spouses married to Tanzanians/residents, government consultants, representatives of international non-governmental organizations, and any other persons who may be determined by the Commissioner-General of Immigration or the Commissioner of Immigration of Zanzibar. However, non-resident directors MUST provide proof that they are directors of a company incorporated in Tanzania. The necessary proof in this regard is a document from BRELA (it is the competent authority responsible for the registration of companies in Tanzania) and the name of the document is called BRELA SEARCH. Therefore, the applicant (in this case the director) should consult with their company and obtain this document for uploading it to the online multiple entry visa application.
Applicants applying for a multiple-entry visa as part of projects or bilateral meetings with government ministries or agencies should obtain a cover letter from the relevant government ministries or agencies and upload such letters in their applications. Failure to follow this procedure may result in the application being rejected.
Applicants for a multiple-entry visa under the family visit category must upload evidence of family relationships with their family members. In this case, it is necessary to provide a marriage certificate (for evidence of kinship of spouses) or birth certificates (for proof of kinship of children).
Validity and length of stay under a multiple-entry visa
A multiple-entry visa can be issued with a validity period of no more than 12 months. However, the maximum stay is three months. This means that the multiple entry visa holder cannot stay in the country for twelve (12) consecutive months. Instead, he/she can stay in the country for no more than three months during each visit.

Gratis visa (diplomatic visa)

Other visa-eligible foreign nationals include holders of passes from the United Nations, the Southern African Development Community, the AU, and other international organizations recognized by the United Republic of Tanzania.
In all the cases listed above, a Tanzanian visa is issued free of charge to a person who is on official duty. In the event that a diplomatic/official passport holder is traveling to Tanzania in an unofficial capacity, he/she is not eligible for a Gratis visa and will have to pay the prescribed fees for the relevant Tanzanian visa.
