The Yemeni Ministry of Education controls the education system.
In recent years, higher education in Yemen has grown rapidly from a few universities at the time of the merger to seven public universities and eight private ones at the moment.
The academic year runs from September to June. Students have extended summer vacations of almost three months, as well as shorter vacations for major Islamic and secular holidays.
University education lasts 4 years, with the exception of engineering and medicine, which require 5 to 6 years of study, respectively.

Prospective students must apply directly to their chosen educational institution. Universities in Yemen use a comprehensive verification process when making admission decisions. Is it possible to get a scholarship to study?
Students who are interested in studying in Yemen have the opportunity to receive a scholarship from federal funding for private colleges and universities. While some of these programs are highly competitive because the field of study here is specific, they make up for this by generously offering scholarships or even full tuition fees to students, especially those in need.
Here are scholarships and grants that you can apply for if you want to study at higher education institutions in Yemen:
- Federal scholarships: the national security education program includes scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students studying culture and language in areas critical to student development. The programs are extremely competitive and offer students full tuition compensation in exchange for working in this field. Basically, you can qualify for a federal scholarship if you want to work for the federal government after graduation.
- David L. Boren Baccalaureate's Degree Scholarships;
- Boren Graduate Fellowship scholarships; this scholarship provides up to 30,000 dollars USA for two years of study to those students who demonstrate the highest achievement and potential to meet the needs of their planned study in an Arab country.
- The national flagship language program is designed exclusively to speed up students' learning in a critical language, such as Arabic, by immersing themselves in the country, its language and Customs. Students can study the language and are eligible for full tuition funding.
