Rules of entry and stay
Under the new Nigeria visa policy 2020, some nationalities and officials can visit Nigeria on short-term visa-free visits. Holders of official travel documents (or Laissez Passer) from international organizations such as the UN, AU (African Union), ECOWAS, and AfDB (African Development Bank) can visit the country without a visa for up to 90 days if they meet other conditions for driving.

Health requirements
Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory for all travelers to Nigeria. Therefore, travelers should ensure that their international vaccination certificates are valid before traveling. In addition, depending on the region from which the applicant is traveling and in which region of Nigeria they wish to spend most of their time, certain malaria prevention measures may be recommended before arrival in Nigeria.

According to the visa policy of Nigeria, foreign nationals can obtain visas for the following categories:
- Short-term visa (24 types) — stay in Nigeria for up to 90 days;
- Visa for temporary residence (36 types) — more than 90 days, but not more than two years;
- Permanent residence visa (15 types) — more than two years.
Short-term visas are suitable for applicants wishing to enter Nigeria for less than 90 days. The following may be eligible for a short-term visa: tourists; short-term visitors; humanitarian workers; non-accredited diplomats; clergymen; journalists; medical patients or patients of folk healers; companions of medical patients; athletes; artists; Nigerians holding foreign passports wishing to visit the country; short-term workers and transit workers.

Tourist visa for Nigeria
A tourist visa allows a single entry into Nigeria. It allows you to stay in the country for up to 90 days.
A tourist visa can be obtained through the eVisa system, Nigerian consulates and obtain a visa on arrival, which is only applicable to nationals of certain countries.

The following documents are required to obtain a tourist visa to Nigeria:
- Passport valid for at least the next 6 months with at least 2 blank visa pages.
- Two recent passport photos (35x40 mm).
- Return ticket.
- Confirmation of sufficient funds.

The process of obtaining a visa to Nigeria
General steps to get Nigeria Visa:
1. Review visa requirements
Check whether you meet the requirements for the selected visa type. After completing the requirements, confirm it at the Nigerian mission or visa center in your country of permanent residence.
2. Apply online
Visit the Nigerian Immigration Portal. Select your country and start the process of obtaining a new visa. Complete the online visa form and print the last confirmation page. Make an online payment and print the payment receipt.
3. Submit the documents
If you are not applying for an eVisa or Visa on Arrival, apply at the nearest Nigerian Embassy, High Commission, Consulate or Visa Center in your country of permanent residence.
Documents required to enter Nigeria with pets:
- Before traveling, your pet must have an ISO-compatible microchip installed.
- Rabies vaccination must be done at least three months before traveling to Nigeria and no more than 12 months.
- No earlier than 30 days after the rabies vaccination, a rabies titer test must be performed (do this before travel).
- Entry of an animal requires an import permit and a health certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian.
- Pets can enter Nigeria through Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos or Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja as checked baggage or air cargo only.
There is no list of prohibited breeds in Nigeria. Mandatory quarantine for imported animals is also not required.

Permissible driving age
The minimum driving age in Nigeria is 18 years. However, most car rental companies do not allow drivers under the age of 21 to rent a car.
Do you need an international driver's license in Nigeria?
Tourists can drive independently in Nigeria with an international driver's license for up to 30 days. To apply for an international driver's license online, you need to provide a valid driver's license from your country and personal information.
Always carry your driver's license from your country and an international driver's permit when driving in Nigeria. Outside the cities, there are checkpoints where the Nigerian police ask for these documents. An international driver's license is also a requirement if your driver's license from your country of residence is not written in English. Also, an international driver's license is required by car rental companies to rent vehicles in Nigeria.
