Cheap trips on public transport in Europe: where and how can you save?
Budget tickets were introduced in many countries this summer. New passes are available for a wide range of passengers. It is planned that such a ticket will provide an opportunity to travel without restrictions within the borders of the states, providing access to various cities and regions. Find out more in which countries and for whom budget tickets have become available
More and more European countries are introducing subscriptions for public transport, which allow significant savings. In this way, the state leadership is trying to encourage local residents to use buses and trams and to refuse to travel by their own transport. Also, this policy is a nice bonus for travelers, because it allows you to buy cheaper tickets.
In which European countries are promotional tickets for public transport already available? Let's talk further.
Germany
From May 1, Germany officially put on sale its monthly travel ticket for nationwide public transport, costing 49 euros. Foreigners who purchase it will be able to use all buses and trains running on short and medium distances (except high-speed trains) for 30 days.
You can buy a ticket on the Deutsche Bahn website and mobile app, as well as at transport companies throughout the country.
The ticket cannot be transferred from one person to another, that is, each foreign visitor will have to purchase his own ticket. Children under the age of six can use public transport for free.
France
Monthly passes for 49 euros will be introduced in France this summer. This new document will be available to a wide range of passengers. It is planned that such a ticket will provide an opportunity to travel without restrictions within the country, providing access to various cities and regions. The service is expected to work for around 700,000 young people under the age of 27.
The only caveat is that the ticket will only be available outside the central French region of Ile-de-France. It will be available on TER trains, which connect local destinations in the regions of France and serve around 1.1 million passengers per day.
Popular TER routes include Bordeaux-Arcachon (€13) and Marseille-Toulon (€14). Passengers who make such trips regularly can save hundreds of euros by purchasing a monthly ticket.
Another option to save on your trip is to buy a ticket from Lyon to Marseille, which usually costs more than 49 euros.

Portugal
In Lisbon, the Navegante monthly pass is available to passengers and is the ideal card for those who use public transport frequently. Two types of travel tickets are available:
- Navegante Municipal is only valid for the municipality of Lisbon, the municipality of Amador or the municipality of Odivelas. It costs 30 euros per month.
- Navegante Metropolitano is valid for the entire metropolitan area of Lisbon (including Lisbon, Amadora and Oeiras). It costs 40 euros per month.
Austria
From July 1, a single KlimaTicket ticket will be operational in Austria, which will allow citizens of countries who have turned 18 this year to use public transport for free during the year. In this way, the country's government wants to encourage as many young people as possible to use public transport.
Taking public transport while traveling in Europe is quite convenient, and considering the promotional price of tickets, it is also economical. Therefore, when planning a trip to the region this summer, be sure to pay attention to the monthly fares from the governments of different countries.
