What are the new objects on the UNESCO list known for?
In 2024, UNESCO added many interesting objects to its list, including:
- Archaeological sites in the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal provinces, South Africa
Monuments are the best-preserved information about the development of modern human behavior.
The hominids found here date back more than 4 million years and are the ancestors of modern humans, Homo sapiens. Also found here are over 9,000 stone artefacts, some 2 million years old, which are the oldest dated stone tools in South Africa.
- Lensois Maranensis National Park, Brazil
The pristine white undulating sand dunes and intermittent freshwater lagoons are spectacular and are definitely one of the main attractions of the park. The pools have different shades of blue. The serenity of the landscape is mesmerizing and it is recognized as the largest sand dune field in South America.
- Historical architectural complex of the Royal Court of Thiebele, Burkina Faso
In the south of Burkina Faso is Tiebele, a small village whose round and rectangular buildings are decorated with unusual patterns. One of the oldest ethnic groups of West Africa lives here - the Kassena tribe. The buildings date back to the 15th century and impress with a truly special character due to their symbol-painted walls.
- The ancient monastery of Tell Umm Amer in the Gaza Strip, Palestine
The UNESCO World Heritage Committee decided to inscribe the Monastery of Saint Hilarion of Tell Umm al-Amr in the central part of the Gaza Strip on the UNESCO World Heritage List and on the List of World Heritage in Danger of Disappearance.
The Monastery of Saint Hilarion at Tell Umm al-Amr, one of the oldest monasteries in the Middle East, was founded by Saint Hilarion and became the home of the first monastic community in the Holy Land.
The decision was taken under an emergency procedure in view of the "threats to this world heritage site due to the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip". The Byzantine-era shrine is located in a village less than ten kilometers from the city of Gaza.
- Beijing Central Axis, China
The central axis of Beijing is a line of historical and cultural monuments that passes through the heart of the Chinese capital. Dating back to the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), this axis stretches 7.8 kilometers from Yongding Gate in the south to the Belfry and Drum Tower in the north. These buildings are examples of ancient Chinese architecture.
