The Ambassador of Romania to the USA Andrey Murau said the other day that the country has fulfilled all the requirements and will be able to join the visa-free program of the USA in March or April 2025. In his opinion, the country's government will make a corresponding announcement in January 2025.

Terms of the visa-free regime for Romanians in the USA

After Romania joins the US visa-free program, citizens of the countries will be able to visit the US without a visa for a period of up to three months. These conditions can increase employment prospects for Romanians and also allow them to explore all 50 states of America.

Romania has fulfilled almost all the requirements for obtaining a visa

Romania is already working hard to join the US visa-free program, because in order to be eligible for visa-free travel, it is necessary to meet certain requirements that are established in the US.

In particular, the state has already made some progress in several areas, including data exchange with the US and the fight against crime. However, one requirement that Romania finds difficult to meet is the number of visa refusals.

According to the rules, to join the visa-free program, a country must have less than three percent of visa refusals. This percentage would mean that the candidate country does not pose a threat to illegal migration to the US.

Ambassador Muraru announced that in October 2024, the percentage of refusals to issue visas to Romanians was less than three percent. By comparison, in 2023, the US authorities issued 60,000 visas to Romanians, while the rejection rate was eight percent.

Accordingly, all requirements for obtaining a visa-free regime have been met.

What other countries are in the process of joining the US visa-free regime?

In addition to Romania, Cyprus and Bulgaria are in the process of joining the visa-free regime from the USA. These countries are also trying to join the Schengen zone. Although Bulgaria and Romania have partially joined Schengen, Cyprus has not yet fulfilled all the requirements.

- Cyprus – in July 2024, Cyprus officially submitted a bill on the US Visa Waiver Program and announced plans to join the program by 2025.

- Bulgaria - by the end of the year, an awareness campaign will be launched for joining the US visa-free regime program. Bulgaria intends to lower the visa refusal threshold as soon as possible.

The Visa Waiver Program allows most citizens of participating countries to travel to the United States for tourism or business for 90 days or less without obtaining a visa. To travel, travelers must have a valid Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA), a valid passport, and a valid entry permit.
