Official: Romanians will not need visas to travel to the US from March 31, 2025

Romania has been officially added to the US Visa Waiver Program, meaning that Romanians will be able to travel to the US without a visa starting March 31, 2025. Find out what the future travel conditions will be and what you need to know about the simplification of migration legislation between countries
Starting March 31, 2025, Romanian citizens will be able to travel to the United States of America without visas for short-term stays, as Romania was officially added to the US Visa Waiver Program on January 10, 2025.
As a reminder, in October 2024, Romanian Ambassador to the United States Andrei Muraru stated that the country had met all the requirements and would be able to join the US Visa Waiver Program in March or April 2025. The decision was made in January 2025.
Visa-free travel to the US for Romanians
After Romania joins the US Visa Waiver Program, citizens of the countries will be able to visit the US without a visa for up to three months for tourism or business purposes.
These conditions could increase employment prospects for Romanians, as well as allow them to explore all 50 states of America.
Thus, Romania has become the 43rd country in the list of the US Visa Waiver Program.
Important! For visa-free travel to the US, Romanian citizens will need to obtain an ESTA authorization. The US Customs and Border Protection expects that the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) online application and mobile application will be updated by the end of March to allow Romanians to travel to the US without a visa.
To move, travel or work safely in a new country, you will need health insurance. You can apply for an extended policy on our website here.

What other countries are in the process of joining the US visa-free regime?
In addition to Romania, Cyprus and Bulgaria are in the process of joining the visa-free regime with the United States:
- Cyprus – in July 2024, Cyprus officially submitted a bill on the US Visa Waiver Program and announced plans to join the program by 2025.
- Bulgaria - an awareness campaign was launched to raise awareness about joining the US Visa Waiver Program. Bulgaria intends to lower the visa refusal threshold as soon as possible.
The Visa Waiver Program allows most citizens of participating countries to travel to the United States for tourism or business for 90 days or less without obtaining a visa. To travel, travelers must have a valid Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA), a valid passport, and a valid entry permit.
We will remind you! Bulgaria and Romania joined the Schengen area on January 1, 2025. This decision allowed people to travel freely without passport control at internal borders with other members of the zone. We have already told you how such innovations affect tourists and what benefits you can expect.
