The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is the largest state on the Arabian Peninsula. It is one of the five countries in the world with the richest natural resources. That is why thousands of people are interested in moving here for permanent residence and work. To legally stay in Saudi Arabia, an expat must obtain a residence permit, also known as Iqama.
The conditions and features of obtaining an Iqama in 2025 are discussed further in this article.
What is an Iqama in Saudi Arabia?
An Iqama is a residence permit issued by the Saudi Arabian government to expats working in the Kingdom. An Iqama is an official document that certifies the identity of a foreigner and provides access to basic services and rights: it allows you to sign lease agreements, enter government buildings and even get your first Saudi SIM card.
To work in the Kingdom, you need to have a local sponsor, and an Iqama is proof that you are legally employed (or have moved with your family).
Who needs an Iqama in Saudi Arabia?
All expats living in Saudi Arabia, from children to adults and the elderly, need an Iqama.
If you are planning to move to Saudi Arabia with your family, you will first need to obtain a permit for yourself, and then for your family members. It is also important to know that Iqamas must be renewed annually.
Important! Always carry your Iqama with you, as it serves as both a residence permit and a work permit.
Types of Iqama in Saudi Arabia
The Saudi Arabian government has the following types of Iqama according to the purpose of your stay in the kingdom:
1. Professional Class Iqama – for those with professional degrees.
2. Dependents Iqama – for family members of expatriates.
3. Civil Servants Iqama – for expatriates employed by the Saudi Arabian government.
4. Business Iqama – for businessmen and investors.
5. Special Privileged Iqama – premium residence.
6. Domestic Worker Iqama – for those who work at home.
7. Labour Class Iqama – for individuals.
Requirements for obtaining Iqama in Saudi Arabia
To apply for a Saudi Iqama, expats and their sponsors must meet the following requirements:
- Have a valid employment contract.
- A medical certificate of absence of diseases.
- Active work permit.
How to Apply for Iqama in Saudi Arabia
To obtain an Iqama in Saudi Arabia, a foreigner needs to follow these steps:
1. Apply for a block visa.
The first step to obtaining the permit is taken by the Saudi employer who sponsors your work permit and Iqama application. The employer’s representative submits the documents for obtaining a block visa to the Saudi Ministry of Labor and Social Development (MLSD), which reserves a visa slot for your specific position.
2. Obtain visa authorization and power of attorney.
Once the block visa is approved, your employer will need to apply to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for a visa authorization number and power of attorney. These documents will allow them to act on your behalf when applying for a visa.
3. Apply for a work permit.
Once the visa authorization is received, your employer can apply for a work permit on your behalf. The application will be reviewed by the Ministry of Labor to ensure that you meet the qualifications for the position.
4. Entry into Saudi Arabia.
You are eligible to enter Saudi Arabia once the Ministry approves your work permit and you can start working in your position.
5. Iqama Application.
Within 90 days of your arrival in Saudi Arabia, your employer will initiate the process of applying for your Saudi Iqama. This requires the foreigner to undergo a medical examination, provide documents, and provide biometric data.
In order to safely move, travel or work in a new country, you will need health insurance. You can issue an extended policy on our website using the link.
How long is an Iqama valid for?
An Iqama in Saudi Arabia is valid for one year. It can also be extended for another year. To do this, contact the relevant authorities at least 3 days before the expiration of the old Iqama.
How to extend an Iqama: 2025 rules
In January 2025, the Saudi Arabian authorities announced that expatriate dependents and domestic workers can now extend their Iqama even if they are not physically present in Saudi Arabia. This can be done through the official online platforms Absher and Muqeem.
Important! This update will also allow residents outside the Kingdom to extend the term of a single or multiple exit and re-entry visa, which is a huge convenience.
