Hotel company Accor analyzed dozens of European destinations and compiled a rating of the best cities for traveling without a car.

Athens, Greece – 99.75/100


The Greek capital topped the ranking thanks to its large pedestrian areas and high accessibility of transport.

- 70% of the city centre is pedestrianised.

- The pedestrianised area around the Acropolis makes sightseeing as easy as possible.

- There are 4-5 transport hubs, with a 24-hour pass costing around €4.1.

- Overall accessibility rating – 97%.

The Plaka, Monastiraki and Psirri areas are best explored on foot, while the coast is easily reached by tram. The metro connects the centre directly to the airport.


Munich, Germany – 99.70/100


The German city came in second place thanks to its combination of efficient transport and convenient routes.

- 50% of the city center is pedestrianized.

- There are 4 major railway junctions.

- 24-hour travel pass is around €9.9, accessibility rating is 95-97%.

The historic center is a quick train ride from the airport. Tourists have access to an extensive tram network and convenient metro entrances.


Lisbon, Portugal – 91.28/100


The Portuguese capital has an impressive variety of transportation options.

- 50% of the city center is pedestrianized.

- 6 major transport junctions.

- Travel pass is €4, accessibility rating is 95%.

Lisbon has a metro, trams, funiculars, and ferries that connect the banks of the Tagus River.


Sofia, Bulgaria – 80-88/100


The city received high marks for comfort and accessibility.

- 60% of the center is pedestrianized.

- There are 4 transport hubs, 0.65 km of pedestrian zones.

- Travel costs approximately €0.95–2.

- Overall accessibility score is 90%.

Sofia is ideal for walking: Borisova Gradina Park, Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and ancient markets are within walking distance.

Hamburg, Vienna, Porto, Madrid, Zurich and Lyon also stand out for their large pedestrian zones, well-thought-out transport network and high comfort indicators (94–97%). They all offer tourists easy movement without the need to use a private car.
