The European Best Destinations platform has published a ranking of the best tourist destinations in Europe in 2026. To compile it, experts analyzed more than 500 popular locations, taking into account Eurostat tourist flow statistics, popularity in search engines and social networks, accessibility of destinations, the level of sustainable tourism, and support from local communities.

The 20 finalists were then put to an international vote by travelers who chose the most attractive cities and regions for travel. As a result, the top 10 included both well-known European capitals and small towns with an authentic atmosphere, cultural heritage and gastronomic traditions.

Madrid topped the European Best Destinations 2026 ranking, becoming the best tourist destination in Europe this year. The capital of Spain attracts travelers with a combination of rich historical heritage, modern culture, and a vibrant urban atmosphere. Tourists note the numerous world-class museums, spacious boulevards, historic squares, and energetic nightlife of the city.

2. Nicosia, Cyprus


Nicosia was ranked second in the European Best Destinations 2026 rating. It is the only capital of Europe that is still divided into two parts - Greek and Turkish, which makes the city a unique historical and political center of the region.


The old city is surrounded by well-preserved Venetian walls from the 16th century, and inside are museums, historic churches, mosques, and traditional markets. Travelers are also attracted by the gastronomic scene of Nicosia, where they can taste Cypriot meze, fresh seafood, and local wines. 3. Styria, Slovenia


The Styria region was ranked third in the ranking of the best destinations in Europe in 2026. It is one of the main wine-growing regions of Slovenia, known for its picturesque vineyards, family wineries, and gastronomic routes. Wine tourism is actively developing here: tourists can attend tastings, get acquainted with local producers and travel along special wine roads.


The region is also home to the city of Ptuj, the oldest city in Slovenia with a history dating back more than two thousand years. It is known for its medieval streets, an ancient castle, and the traditional Kurentovanje carnival, which is included in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List. Another unique fact is that Maribor is home to the oldest vine in the world, which is over 400 years old and still bearing fruit.

4. Verona, Italy


Verona was ranked fourth in the ranking of the best tourist destinations in Europe in 2026. The city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its well-preserved Roman and medieval architecture. One of the main attractions is the Arena di Verona, a first-century Roman amphitheater that still hosts opera festivals and open-air concerts.


The city is also known as the setting for the tragedy Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. Tourists often visit Juliet's house with its legendary balcony, which has become a popular photo location. In addition to historical monuments, Verona attracts with gastronomy and wine - the Valpolicella wine region is located nearby, where the famous Italian wines Amarone and Ripasso are produced.

5. Paris, France


Paris is traditionally included in the list of the most popular tourist cities in the world and in 2026 was ranked fifth in the ranking of the best destinations in Europe. It was here that Winston Churchill once liked to work - the British politician and artist repeatedly came to Camara de Lobos to paint local landscapes. Today, the city attracts tourists with seafood, a traditional poncha drink (a cocktail made of rum, honey, and citrus), and magnificent views of the Atlantic Ocean. 7. Alacati, Turkey


Alacati is a resort town on the Aegean coast, which was ranked seventh in the ranking of the best tourist destinations in Europe in 2026. It is known for its narrow stone streets, Ottoman-era buildings, and numerous boutique hotels, restaurants, and cafes.


The city is also one of the best places in Europe for windsurfing thanks to its stable winds and shallow lagoons. International competitions and water sports festivals are held here every year. In addition to beach recreation, tourists are attracted by local wineries, markets with farm products and traditional Aegean cuisine with an abundance of seafood and vegetable dishes.

8. Burano, Italy


Burano is a small island in the Venetian Lagoon, which was ranked eighth in the ranking of the best tourist destinations in Europe in 2026. According to the local tradition, homeowners must coordinate the color of the facade with the municipality to preserve the island's characteristic appearance.


The island is also famous for its centuries-old tradition of hand-weaving lace. Lisbon was ranked ninth in the ranking of the best destinations in Europe in 2026. The capital of Portugal is located on seven hills along the Tagus River and is known for its panoramic observation decks - miradouros, which offer views of the city's tiled roofs and the Atlantic Ocean.


The city attracts tourists to the historic neighborhoods of Alfama, Bairro Alto, and Belem, where narrow streets, old trams, and architecture from the era of great geographical discoveries have been preserved. Among the main attractions are the Belem Tower, the Jerónimos Monastery, and the famous yellow tram #28. Lisbon is also known for its cuisine: tourists are sure to try pastéis de nata, traditional Portuguese custard cakes.

10. Almeria, Spain


Almeria closes the top ten tourist destinations in Europe in 2026. The city is located on the Mediterranean coast in the south of Spain and is known for one of the sunniest climates in Europe, with more than 300 days of sunshine a year.


The main historical landmark of the city is the Alcazaba of Almeria, one of the largest Arab fortresses in Spain, built in the X century. Nearby is the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, known for its volcanic landscapes, wild beaches, and clear water. Due to its unique desert landscapes, the vicinity of Almeria is also often used as a location for filming movies and westerns.
