On the night of March 16, the Oscars 2026 ceremony took place in Los Angeles. The event traditionally took place at the Dolby Theater and brought together the world's top film industry representatives - actors, directors, producers and film critics.

The main winner of the evening was the film “One Battle After Another” directed by Paul Tom Anderson, which won six statuettes at once. The second most awarded film was Sinners, which received four awards from the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts.

The ceremony was also memorable for several unusual moments: one of the winners ignored the event, two winners were announced in one category at once, and some of the Academy's decisions sparked active discussions among viewers and critics.

How the Oscar 2026 ceremony went: host's jokes, surprises and discussions

For the second year in a row, the ceremony was hosted by American comedian Conan O'Brien. The showman traditionally relied on humor and repeatedly joked about the guests of the ceremony. In particular, he poked fun at one of the nominees, Timothy Chalamet, recalling his controversial statements about opera and ballet. O'Brien joked that it was good that at least jazz was not nominated this time.

During the ceremony, the host also touched upon the topic of artificial intelligence, which is increasingly influencing the film industry. Today, the use of AI in film production is a topic of much discussion among actors, screenwriters, and producers, as technology can change the approach to content creation.

Another topic for jokes was the future broadcast of the ceremony. Starting in 2029, the Oscars will be broadcast for free on YouTube. O'Brien ironically noted that users without a premium subscription will have to watch a lot of ads.

The ceremony was also not without surprises. In the Best Short Film category, the academics were unable to determine a single winner, as two films received the same number of votes. As a result, two projects received statuettes at once: "The Singers and Two People Exchanging Saliva. Such situations are extremely rare at the Oscars.

The winner of the Best Supporting Actor category also attracted special attention. The American actor and director Sean Penn, who won the award for his role in the movie One Battle After Another, decided to ignore the ceremony. The reasons for his absence were not officially explained, but the actor had previously announced his readiness to boycott the Oscars after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was not allowed to speak at the ceremony in 2022.

The victory of the documentary Mr. Nobody vs. Putin in the Best Feature Documentary category also sparked discussions. The film tells the story of how propaganda is imposed on Russian children in schools. At the same time, some critics claimed that the film promotes a narrative about the so-called “good Russians,” which sparked active discussions in the media. In addition, the author of the film delivered his speech in Russian, while most of the winners spoke in English.

Oscar winners 2026: the main awards of the ceremony

This year's Academy Awards brought victories to both recognized Hollywood stars and new names. The most awards were given to the film One Battle After Another, which became a real winner of the ceremony and won several key statuettes at once.
