Euronews reports on new research from KAYAK showing where flights and stays are cheaper this December. Analysts compared flight and hotel searches made between 1 April and 1 September, for trips between 19 December 2026 and 9 January 2027, with the same period last year. For anyone still deciding where to go, a Christmas trip in 2026 may cost less than it seems, provided you pick the right destination and date.

The report looks at departures from France, Germany and the UK, but the logic behind Christmas pricing applies to other markets too. Below you’ll find the cheapest routes, the best days to fly, hotels that have become cheaper, and destinations for anyone craving winter sun.

Even the best-value ticket won’t save a trip if something goes wrong. Travel insurance covers the risks of a journey, from medical care to lost luggage or a cancelled flight. Enter your citizenship and destination on Visit World and choose a policy online.

Cheapest Christmas destinations from France, Germany and the UK

The list of leaders depends on the country of departure, since ticket prices largely reflect competition on a route. Here are the best-value return flights:

- From France: Milan (from €126), Brussels (from €153), Venice and Berlin (from €161), London (from €169).

- From Germany: Milan (average price €116), Rome (from €169), Vienna (from €170), Paris (from €190), London (from €192).

- From the UK: Dublin (from £127, or €151), Barcelona (from £131, or €155), Milan (from £142, or €169), Prague and Madrid (from £143, or €170).

The British market is also interesting for long-haul routes. According to KAYAK, the average return fare to Atlanta fell by 39% to £587, and to Washington by 27% to £514. At the same time, the company’s CEO notes that overall fares this year are following the same seasonal pattern as last year, just at a higher price level. So the drops apply to specific routes, not to the whole market.

Which flight dates are the best value for Christmas 2026?

According to KAYAK, the cheapest departure day for travellers from France and the UK is 23 December, and for those from Germany it is 21 December. The difference is especially striking in the UK. The most popular and most expensive departure day is 19 December, while on the 23rd the average fare is around £615, roughly 36% lower. There is also an unexpected option for those who celebrate at home but want to put off the January blues: flying on New Year’s Eve turned out to be the cheapest option in all three countries.

When is the best time to book a Christmas trip?

Timing your purchase is trickier, because the advice varies. According to Expedia, international flights are usually best booked about 15–30 days before departure.

- For the German market, Euronews points to December.

- For France, the authors say travellers will have to take a gamble and wait until almost the last week before the holidays.

- UK travellers are advised not to wait longer than six weeks before Christmas. KAYAK’s own overview for the US market gives a different window: prices usually dip four to seven weeks before departure, i.e. from mid-November to early December. The company’s analysis last year showed that fares rose by 15% in the final week before Christmas.

The takeaway: cheap Christmas flights rarely wait until the last minute. If the route works for you, set a price alert now and buy as soon as the price drops to an acceptable level.

What has happened to hotel prices, from Lapland to Bangkok?

Hotel prices have changed too, sometimes unexpectedly. In Rovaniemi in Finnish Lapland, regarded as the home of Santa Claus, the average cost per night fell by 22% to €275. In Europe, Istanbul (−12%, €76 on average), Adeje in Spain (−8%, €235), Paris (−5%, €140) and York (−8%, £96, or €114) have become cheaper.

Those prepared to fly further will gain even more. Koh Samui in Thailand dropped by 21% to €115 a night, Bangkok by 20% to €76, Tokyo by 19% to €110 and Singapore by 13% to €164. The Maldives became 10% cheaper (€916), New York 11% cheaper (€273), and Fort-de-France, the capital of Martinique, 10% cheaper (€123).

The timing of your hotel booking also affects the price, and again it differs by country:

- France: a week before Christmas, domestic stays are about 18% cheaper than in October. For trips abroad, prices are about 7% lower from late November through December. The best check-in date is 21 December.

- Germany: two weeks before Christmas, offers are 9% cheaper than the mid-November peak. It is best to check in on Christmas Day within the country, or on 21 December abroad.

- United Kingdom: if you wait until the last two weeks, you can save 16% on international stays and 20% on domestic ones. The best check-in dates are 22 December within the country and 23 December abroad.

These figures are averages, so don’t treat them as a promise of a discount in any specific city. The most popular resorts sell out first. If you have set your sights on Lapland or the Maldives, it is safer to book a room with free cancellation and keep an eye on the price.

Where can you find winter sun without inflated prices?

The cheapest trips are usually close to home. But when the long dark evenings have worn you down, it makes sense to look further afield. KAYAK’s travel trends point to several destinations where fares have dropped noticeably.

- French travellers should look at Casablanca and Rabat in Morocco (−19%), Agadir (−12%), Koh Samui (−17%) and Sri Lanka (−11% compared with 2025).

- German travellers can reach Lima 29% cheaper than last year, Cairo 18% cheaper, Port Louis in Mauritius 14% cheaper, and Cancún and Marrakech 8% cheaper.

- UK travellers are in luck with Agadir (−26%), Kingston (−21%) and Montego Bay (−18%) in Jamaica.

For long-haul destinations, check visa requirements and entry conditions in advance, as there is often not enough time for them during the Christmas season.

How can you avoid overpaying for a Christmas holiday?

Overall, the picture looks like this. The best days to fly are mostly 21–23 December and New Year’s Eve, the most noticeable discounts appear on less obvious destinations, and it is worth booking a few weeks before the trip rather than in the final week. The prices in the study are based on search queries, so check the final cost, including baggage and connections, before paying. Think about insurance too: a cancelled or delayed flight in the festive season hits your wallet harder than usual.

During the Christmas season planes are packed, and any delay can spoil a trip. Depending on its type, a travel insurance policy covers trip cancellation or delay, emergency medical care, lost or stolen luggage and emergency evacuation. For long-haul destinations such as Thailand or the Maldives it is especially worthwhile. Read the terms and coverage carefully before paying.
