Swedish immigration rules for foreign nationals are governed by local law. Citizens of European Union countries enjoy simplified conditions, as they do not need to obtain a visa to move. While non-EU nationals must obtain a visa of the appropriate category to obtain a residence permit. For example, a work visa may allow for further transition to permanent residence.

According to statistics, the largest number of migrants arrive in Sweden from Greece, Latvia, Germany, Turkey and Iran.

Obtaining a residence permit in Sweden for EU citizens

Citizens of EU member states can easily immigrate to Sweden and obtain a residence permit. To do so, they need to start the procedure for obtaining a temporary residence permit, which can become permanent after a certain period of time.

EU citizens who do not need an employment contract can relocate if they have sufficient financial resources to live.

Obtaining a residence permit for non-EU citizens 2024

For non-EU nationals, the requirements for moving to and applying for permanent residence in Sweden are stricter. They must apply for a visa to enter Sweden from their home country.

The following types of visas are available to foreign nationals from non-EU countries:

1. Student visas for studying at universities and colleges in Sweden approved by the Ministry of Education;

2. Business visas to establish a company or work as a private entrepreneur;

3. Work visas on the basis of an employment contract with a Swedish company;

4. Investor visas for those who have sufficient experience in doing business;

5. Applicants for academic research visas are also entitled to temporary rather than permanent residence in Sweden.

For non-EU nationals wishing to visit Sweden for family reunification, a residence permit is required. This requires compliance with various criteria on the part of both the immigrant and the Swedish resident. Our specialists are ready to assist you in the process of applying for this family reunification visa.

Compared to other EU countries, obtaining permanent residence in Sweden is somewhat simplified for applicants from non-EU countries, especially when it comes to relocating on the basis of an investment visa. Our experts are ready to provide you with the necessary support in this process.

Residence permit in Sweden for international students 2024

Sweden is home to several well-known educational institutions that attract thousands of students from all over the world every year. To enter Swedish universities, international students need to obtain a student visa, which is considered a national visa.

The process of obtaining a student visa involves several steps. First, an international student must be accepted to the desired educational institution. This means applying to the chosen faculty. After being accepted, the foreigner receives a certificate of enrolment, on the basis of which he or she can apply for a student visa.

If a student intends to stay in Sweden for more than 90 days, he or she must apply for a residence permit. This applies not only to studies, but also to work or plans to start a business. A residence permit gives you the opportunity to become a Swedish citizen in the future.

Obtaining permanent residence in Sweden through family reunification

Foreign nationals living in Sweden with a residence permit have the right to invite their family for family reunification. This process allows close relatives to obtain a family reunification visa and join their family in Sweden.

The process of obtaining a family reunification visa involves submitting a package of documents, which includes detailed information about the resident status in Sweden and documents related to the relatives. It is also important to have sufficient living space for yourself and the family members joining you, which is required of permanent residence permit holders under Swedish law.

Documents for obtaining a residence permit in Sweden in 2024

The documents required to apply for a residence permit in Sweden depend on the immigration status of the applicant. Applicants are required to submit the following documents to the Swedish Immigration Service:

1. A valid foreign passport;

2. A utility bill as a proof of residence;

3. Employment contract (if the reason for moving is work-related);

Permanent residence in Sweden through employment 2024

Employment is the most common way to move to Sweden and obtain permanent residence. Citizens of the EU and EEA countries can work here to obtain residency status. The procedures differ slightly for different categories of immigrants. EU citizens can seek employment in Sweden without additional visa requirements. While non-EU/EEA nationals must obtain a work visa and apply from their home country to enter Sweden.

There are two ways to obtain a residence permit in Sweden in 2024:

1. Work permit;

2. Employment visa.

Citizens of non-EU and EEA countries must first obtain a work visa to obtain a work permit that will allow them to live and work in this country. In addition, a job offer is required to obtain a work permit.

To obtain permanent residence in Sweden in 2024, the following requirements must be met:

1. A valid foreign passport;

2. A job offer that must comply with certain rules;

3. The monthly salary must be at least SEK 13,000 (approximately EUR 1,400);

4. The job offer must include health and life insurance as well as social security.

As for the job offer, it must be announced at least 10 days before the candidate is offered the position, which must be in line with the terms and conditions of other job offers available on the labour market. However, these conditions must be met by the Swedish employer.

Obtaining permanent residence in Sweden through investment in 2024

Businessmen can immigrate to Sweden and apply for a Swedish investment visa. This is one of the most profitable ways to move here, as it allows a person to run their own business by investing a certain amount of money.

First of all, it should be noted that this option is available to non-EU citizens, who should know the following about it:

1. The programme is addressed to people who are at least 18 years old;

2. They must have no criminal record and good moral character;

3. They must provide evidence of the ability to invest at least EUR 100,000 (or SKK equivalent) in the project;

4. Applicants must prove that they have business experience;

5. Knowledge of English is also required.

The investor must demonstrate that they have sufficient funds to support themselves and their family members:

1. SEK 200,000 for the main investor;

2. SEK 100,000 for the spouse/partner of the main investor;

3. An additional SEK 50,000 for each child accompanying the investor.

As for the investment project, it must include the registration of a company. For this purpose, a business plan can significantly increase the chances of obtaining a residence permit in Sweden.

Duration of the procedure for obtaining permanent residence in Sweden 2024

Citizens of European Union and non-EU countries have different timeframes for obtaining permanent residence in Sweden, depending on their status and circumstances:

1. EU citizens living in Sweden can apply for permanent residence after 5 years of residence in the country;

2. Non-EU nationals can also apply after 5 years of residence in Sweden, but they can apply earlier if they invest at least EUR 100,000 in a Swedish business;

3. Students from non-EU countries who have changed their student visas to work visas can also apply after 5 years of residence in Sweden;

4. Foreign nationals who are married to Swedish citizens and have been living here for 2 years can apply for a residence permit after 3 years.

Applying for a permanent residence permit in Sweden also has its own requirements. For example, those who work in Sweden under an employment contract must have a minimum monthly salary of around €1,300. Those who choose the investor visa option are required to invest at least the equivalent of EUR 100,000 in a Swedish business.
