Australia has again made the visa process for international students more difficult by increasing the minimum amount of savings a student must have to enter the country. Starting from May 10, 2024, students will need to have at least 29,710 Australian dollars (₹16,29,964) to obtain a visa.

This decision was made to ensure that students are able to pay for basic living expenses while studying in Australia, given that they may be absent from classes for 25% of the year and will be working during this time.

This is the second increase in the savings amount in the last seven months. Earlier, the government raised the minimum amount to AU$24,505 in October, after a previous increase to AU$21,041 (£11,54,361).

What changes are expected for international students in Australia in 2024?

According to Australia Visa News, in July 2023, the number of temporary student visas issued in the country reached a record high of 654,870, which shows a significant increase compared to the previous year. This trend indicates a gradual increase in the popularity of Australia among international students as an attractive study destination.

The Post Study Work Right (PSWR) has been extended for 2 years from July 1, 2023, giving students the opportunity to find employment.

A minimum overall grade point average of 5.5 is required from international students to enter universities, which contributes to improving the quality of student admission and provides the necessary level of knowledge for successful study.

Also, starting from July 1, 2023, working hours during academic semesters were limited to 48 hours per 2 weeks.

Starting from September 8, 2023, foreign students are no longer allowed to register for two courses at the same time during the first 6 months of the main course.

New measures to regulate student immigration in Australia in 2024

Following the lifting of restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Australia has witnessed a significant increase in immigration, particularly from India, China and the Philippines. This has resulted in a shortage of rental housing and record-high spending on new housing construction.

According to the Australian visa news, in July 2023, the number of temporary student visas issued reached a record high of 654,870, a significant increase compared to the previous year.

In accordance with the new rules, the Australian Department of Immigration has increased the requirements for English language proficiency for student visas. In particular, the government has replaced the “Genuine Temporary Entry” requirement with “Genuine Student” to ensure that students are truly seeking education rather than seeking employment opportunities.

Although international education is one of Australia's largest export industries, the influx of migrants, mostly students from other backgrounds, has put a significant strain on the country's resources. This prompted the Australian government to introduce a “no further stay” provision to reduce pressure on local resources and infrastructure.
