Taiwan plans to join a growing list of East Asian countries offering visas to digital nomads. The announcement was made by National Development Council (NDC) Minister Paul Liu at a press conference held on July 18.

During what period will the permit be valid?

Taiwan plans to issue digital nomadic visas for up to six months. Currently, there is no separate digital nomad visa in Taiwan, the country only offers the Taiwan Golden Employment Card, which also applies to digital nomads.

The government plans to approve a separate visa for digital nomads. However, the registration procedure and income requirements have not yet been announced.

Why has Taiwan decided to introduce a digital nomad visa?

The Minister of National Council and Development said that Taiwan aims to increase the number of digital nomads in the country to boost domestic tourism and economy.

By implementing this visa, the state plans to attract 120,000 talents from around the world by 2028. This is an important step, especially given that Taiwan's neighboring countries (South Korea, Japan and Thailand) have already approved similar permits.

Liu also announced that in addition, Taiwan plans to make it easier for skilled, highly paid foreign workers to obtain permanent residency in the country.
