Social unrest in the cities of Great Britain has been going on for a week. They covered even large tourist centers. In this regard, a number of countries have issued warnings to their citizens. What is known about the cause of the riots and what is the level of danger for foreigners?

Countries that have issued travel warnings for their citizens to the UK

The UAE, Malaysia, Indonesia, Nigeria, Australia and India are warning their citizens about the ongoing protests and the associated dangers. In particular, the governments of all six countries asked their citizens to avoid protests in Great Britain, and the Australian government indicated the possibility of riots and violence. In addition, travelers are advised to follow developments in the media and follow the instructions of local authorities.

In which cities of the United Kingdom are there protests?

Currently, riots have covered the major tourist centers of Britain - Liverpool and Manchester, and mass meetings are taking place in Belfast, Northern Ireland, as well as in Darlington and Plymouth.

The only city among popular destinations in Great Britain where there was no violence or social unrest was London.

However, the Nigerian authorities warn that the riots "may spread throughout the country", so they are advised to avoid places of mass gathering of people throughout the territory of the United Kingdom.

What is the cause of mass protests in Great Britain?

On July 29, three girls aged six to nine were killed in an attack at a children's dance event in the seaside town of Southport in northern England. Another eight children and two adults were injured.

The police arrested a 17-year-old boy, and social networks began to spread false information that the suspect was an Islamist migrant. This led to violent anti-Muslim protests in Southport the following day and an attempted attack on the city's mosque. On Sunday, an attack was made on the hotel where the asylum seekers live. Anti-migrant riots have since spread to more than 20 locations across Britain.

The number of arrests so far stands at nearly 400, but is expected to rise. Considering that similar riots in Britain in 2011 led to the murder of three Muslims, foreigners are better off observing security measures and refusing to attend mass events.

Should travelers avoid traveling to the UK?

The general advice is to assess your personal circumstances and decide whether you are comfortable continuing your journey.

If your country of residence advises against any travel to the UK, you may be able to get a refund for your ticket or hotel booking. However, this is not guaranteed, so it is best to speak to your insurer before canceling any flights or bookings.

When planning a trip abroad, be sure to take care of a travel insurance policy, which will protect you from unforeseen situations during the trip and compensate for unplanned expenses - for treatment, in case of lost luggage, flight cancellation, etc.

Tips for staying safe during protests

Given the unstable geopolitical situation in the world, you should be prepared for possible protests abroad and have an action plan:

1. Be informed and do your research beforehand

Before you travel, be aware of current events and possible protests at your destination. Follow authoritative news sources, read travel tips and use social media platforms for real-time information. Research the local laws and regulations regarding protests in the country you are visiting to better understand the context and possible risks.

2. Control the situation while at the destination

Be alert and monitor the situation while at your destination. Be aware of your surroundings for any signs of upcoming protests, gatherings or rising tensions. Pay attention to local news, social media updates and conversations with local residents to stay informed of any planned demonstrations.

3. Avoid places of mass unrest

If there is a protest or demonstration nearby, it is generally recommended to avoid the area. Large gatherings can be unpredictable and tensions can quickly rise. Instead, look for alternative routes or change your route to explore other parts of the city or country. Your safety should always be the top priority.

4. Respect and follow the instructions given by local authorities

If there is an official order to avoid certain areas or impose a curfew, follow it accordingly. Law enforcement officers are responsible for maintaining order and public safety. If you find yourself near a protest, follow their instructions and stay calm.

5. Avoid provocative situations

Dress modestly, respect local customs, and refrain from engaging in political discussions or activities that may cause tension.

6. Have an emergency plan

In case the situation escalates or becomes dangerous, it is extremely important to have a plan of action. Share your travel itinerary and contact information with a trusted person at home, and always have important phone numbers, embassies and local emergency numbers with you.
