Kotor - a medieval city called “mini-Dubrovnik”
Kotor is one of the most famous historical cities in Montenegro, located in the depths of the picturesque Kotor Bay. The old town is surrounded by massive stone walls that climb the mountain slopes and create one of the most spectacular views on the Adriatic. It is thanks to its unique architecture and well-preserved historic center that Kotor is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Due to the similarity of architecture, it is sometimes called a “mini-Dubrovnik” because you can also see characteristic Dalmatian buildings with ochre facades, narrow stone alleys, cozy squares with fountains, and old Romanesque churches. However, there are usually much fewer tourists here than in a popular Croatian resort.
One of the main attractions for travelers is a climb to the St. John's Fortress, which rises above the city. It offers a panoramic view of the red roofs of the old town, the winding bay, and the surrounding mountains.
Among the places worth visiting in Kotor:
1. St. Trifon's Cathedral - one of the oldest churches on the Adriatic coast
2. Old Town of Kotor with a maze of medieval streets
3. Fortress of St. John with panoramic views of the bay
4. The Maritime Museum of Montenegro, which tells about the maritime history of the region
Kotor is ideal for those who want to combine the historical atmosphere, beautiful seascapes and leisurely walks through the ancient streets.
Perast is a cozy fishing town without tourist crowds
Just a few kilometers from Kotor is the small but very atmospheric town of Perast. It is located on the same Bay of Kotor and looks like it has been frozen in time: a narrow promenade, old stone houses, and the silence that is sometimes so lacking in popular resorts.
Despite the fact that Kotor is considered one of the main tourist centers of the country, Perast has retained a much more relaxed atmosphere. There are no major cruise ports or noisy crowds here, just a few cozy seafood restaurants, small hotels, and old stone palaces.
For such a small town of about 250 inhabitants, Perast has a very rich history. During the period of Venetian rule, more than 16 baroque palaces were built here, which still form the unique appearance of the city.
The main attraction of Perast is the Island of Our Lady on the Rock (Gospa od Škrrjela), an artificial island with a Baroque church located right in the middle of the bay. It can be reached by a small taxi boat - the trip takes about five minutes.
What to do in Perast:
1. Walk along the ancient promenade overlooking the Bay of Kotor
2. Visit the island of Our Lady of the Rock and its baroque church
3. Admire the old Venetian palaces
4. Dine in small restaurants with fresh seafood
Perast is an ideal place for those looking for a relaxing vacation, beautiful sea views and the atmosphere of an old Adriatic town.
Cetinje - the historic capital among the mountains
Cetinje is a small mountain town that is considered the cultural and historical capital of Montenegro. Although today the administrative center of the country is Podgorica, Cetinje has played a key role in the political and spiritual life of the state for centuries.
The city is located at the foot of the Lovcen mountain range and has a completely different atmosphere than the coastal resorts. There are no noisy beaches and no large tourist flows. Instead, guests are attracted by cozy streets, historic palaces, museums, and buildings of former diplomatic missions.
The center of Cetinje is mostly pedestrianized, so walking around the city is very comfortable. Along the ancient streets are bright historical houses, museums and small cafes, and against the backdrop of the entire city rise dark green mountains, which gave the country its name - Black Mountain.
What to see in Cetinje:
1. Cetinje Monastery - one of the most important Orthodox shrines in the country
2. The Blue Palace - the former royal residence
3. Chipur Church, where representatives of the Petrovic dynasty are buried
4. Numerous museums and old diplomatic buildings that remind of the historical role of the city
Cetinje is a great stopover for those who want to get a deeper understanding of Montenegro's history, see the other side of the country and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of a mountain town.
Budva is a Mediterranean resort with a two-thousand-year history
Budva is one of the oldest cities on the Adriatic coast and one of the most popular resorts in Montenegro. The history of this city dates back more than two thousand years: the ancient Greeks, Romans, Venetians and other civilizations that shaped the culture of the coast left their mark here.
The old town of Budva is located on a small peninsula and is surrounded by massive stone walls. Inside is a maze of narrow cobblestone streets, ancient squares, Romanesque churches, and cozy cafes. Despite the popularity of the resort, this part of the city has retained the atmosphere of an ancient Adriatic settlement.
Budva attracts tourists not only for its history but also for its beautiful beaches. One of the most famous is Mogren Beach, which is located near the cliffs near the old town. It offers great views of the fortified walls and seascapes.
What to do in Budva:
1. Walk through the narrow streets of the old town
2. Visit the Budva citadel overlooking the Adriatic Sea
3. Relax on the beach of Mogren
4. Spend an evening on the waterfront or in the old port
Budva combines living history, seascapes and the atmosphere of a Mediterranean resort, which is why it is often called one of the most interesting cities for vacation in Montenegro.
Durmitor - mountain nature, which is compared to Switzerland
Durmitor National Park is one of the most impressive natural locations in Montenegro. This mountainous region is known for its jagged peaks, dense pine forests, and glacial lakes that stretch to the horizon. Because of these alpine landscapes, it is often compared to Switzerland, but the vacation here is much more affordable.
One of the main natural gems of the park is the Black Lake (Crno Jezero), an emerald reservoir surrounded by mountains and dense forests. There are hiking trails around the lake that allow you to enjoy the scenery and clean mountain air.
Durmitor offers many opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts: from mountain hiking to rafting. Rafting along the Tara River canyon, one of the deepest canyons in Europe, is especially popular.
What to do in Durmitor:
1. Take a walk around the Black Lake
2. Go hiking along the mountain trails of the park
3. Try rafting in the canyon of the Tara River
4. Climb Bobotov Cook - the highest peak of the massif
Durmitor is the perfect place for those who want to see a different Montenegro: wildlife, alpine landscapes and tranquil mountain scenery that contrast sharply with the country's popular beach resorts.
