Canada has revised its border crossing rules for individuals who work remotely while in the country. The updated guidelines for border officers, published on May 26, 2026, require proof of a foreign source of income and confirmation that the individual has no intention of seeking employment in the Canadian labor market.

What has changed in Canada’s entry rules for remote workers?

Prior to the update of the guidelines, Canadian border officers generally did not require digital nomads to provide additional documents. This practice has now been discontinued. Travelers planning to work online for foreign employers or international clients while in Canada are required to provide documentation confirming that all of their income comes from outside the country.

The general permission to stay in Canada for up to six months as a visitor remains in effect. At the same time, the requirements for justifying the purpose of the visit have become significantly stricter.

What documents do digital nomads need at the Canadian border?

Before traveling to Canada, remote workers are advised to prepare the following set of documents:

• an employment contract with a foreign employer;
• recent pay stubs;
• invoices from foreign clients (for freelancers and contractors);
• proof of income sources outside Canada;
• evidence of intent to leave Canada after the visit ends.

Failure to provide these documents may result in denial of entry and complicate future travel applications.

Stays longer than six months and family members

Individuals planning to stay in Canada for longer than six months must apply for the appropriate visa. Family members accompanying a remote worker are also required to secure their own temporary resident status.

Prohibition on employment with Canadian employers

Canadian authorities have further clarified their position regarding the so-called “gray zone.” Digital nomads entering the country with visitor status are not permitted to work for a Canadian employer. To work legally for a Canadian company, you must obtain a separate work permit or meet the conditions of a special exemption.

This clarification is aimed at addressing the practice where some visitors entered as remote workers but were actually looking for work in the local job market.

The role of employers in preparing for a trip to Canada

The updated requirements also apply to companies whose employees work remotely from within Canada. Employers are advised to issue official letters confirming that the employee is on an overseas salary and performing duties outside the Canadian labor market.
