In March 2023, China opened its borders to foreigners for the first time in three years of the pandemic. The authorities made this decision after declaring victory over COVID-19. Here's how to get to China and whether quarantine restrictions are in place.

Visa to China for foreign tourists

China issues 12 types of visas, so a foreigner needs to clearly understand the purpose of their visit to the country. The most popular visas are L, X1, and Z categories:

L visa is a tourist visa;

X1 - a visa for studying for more than 180 days;

Z - work visa.

It should be added that certain regions of China have specific entry conditions. For example, to stay in Hong Kong or Tibet, you do not need a visa, but you need to prepare a package of documents and fill out a special questionnaire.

A tourist visa allows a traveler to travel around the country for 30 days. If, for some reason, a tourist needs to extend their stay in the country, they can contact the Chinese migration service and ask for an extension.

A visa is obtained at the Chinese embassy by submitting a package of documents: a foreign and domestic passport, 35x45 mm photos, a certificate of employment, and a completed visa application form.

Important! A visa obtained before March 28, 2020 is still valid.

Are there any quarantine restrictions in China at the moment?

Starting April 29, 2023, China has lifted its strict COVID-19 restrictions. Tourists only need to have the results of an antigen test. You can even do this test yourself. There is no need to present a vaccination certificate.

A negative test result must be reported to the Chinese Customs Service by filling out a health declaration in the WeChat China Customs program on the website or through the China Customs app. Airlines will not check the test result during boarding.

It is not necessary to wear a protective mask. However, many people continue to wear it in public places.
