Italy is an incredible Mediterranean country, and moving to it can be a great decision. The country has a vivid nature and a rich history. Italians have made a significant contribution to world art, fashion, architecture, cinema, opera, literature, and design. Italian cuisine is considered one of the best in the world. However, as in any other country in the world, expats may face certain challenges when moving to Italy.

What should you be prepared for when planning a move to Italy? Read on.

Language barrier

The official language in the country is Italian. English is less common in Italy. Of course, most tourists, expats, and a large percentage of Italians speak English, but you will need to learn at least some Italian if you plan to move to Italy.

Difficulties of migration legislation

To move to Italy, you need to collect a certain package of documents. Also, depending on the purpose of the trip, you need to apply for an appropriate visa. The country distinguishes between long-term and short-term visas. A tourist visa will allow you to enjoy your vacation in the resorts of the Mediterranean Sea. Each of the permits has certain peculiarities.

Shortage of jobs

There are many seasonal jobs in Italy - in a bar, hotel or restaurant. However, if you plan to look for a permanent job, you may face a shortage of vacancies, especially if you do not speak Italian. Therefore, we advise you to start looking for a job before moving to Italy.

Long-term rental housing

Most rental agreements in Italy are concluded for three years or longer. If after some time you decide that the accommodation does not meet your needs or you need to move, then it will be quite expensive to terminate the lease.

Opening a bank account

Opening a bank account is an important step in moving to Italy. Most employers will insist that you have an Italian bank account to pay your salary. Banks offer special accounts for non-residents, but they are subject to restrictions on what funds can be transferred to them. Therefore, opening an account can be a complicated bureaucratic process.

Difficulties in buying a car

Due to the peculiarities of the market, it is often easier to buy a new car in Italy than a used one. To buy a car, you need to provide a tax code, residence documents, and proof of insurance.

After the purchase, before you go on your first trip, make sure that the car is registered at the motor vehicle office, pay the car tax and notify the Italian car club. You may also find the Italian driving culture quite aggressive.
