The European Commission has proposed to increase the basic fee for obtaining Schengen visas, explaining this by the rising inflation rate in the EU. According to this proposal, the cost of visas for adults will increase by 12%, from EUR 80 to EUR 90, and the cost of visas for children will increase from EUR 40 to EUR 45. This initiative is a response to economic realities that affect the financial capacity of EU countries and their citizens.

Schengen visas remain an important element for those travelling to non-EU countries that are not eligible for 90-day visa-free access to the EU and Schengen area. These include citizens of South Africa, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and China.

Increase in the cost of a Schengen visa

The European Commission is considering plans to further increase the fee for Schengen visas for countries that do not cooperate in readmission. The cost of visas could potentially increase by 12%, not for the first time in view of inflationary pressures in the EU. The tariff increase also applies to visa for children, which could rise by €5 to €45. These new proposals are intended to support the budget and compensate for the rising costs of administering visa processes.

However, this is not the only update to the EU visa control system. There are plans to introduce a digital Schengen visa, which should replace traditional stickers in passports. This will make the visa application process more convenient and efficient for travellers, who will be able to apply online regardless of their location. The digital platform is expected to be implemented by 2028.

Despite all the changes, attention to timing remains important, as any new rules will come into force 20 days after their publication in the Official Journal of the European Union.
