Euro 2024 in Germany: tourist guide to the cities where the competitions are held (Dortmund, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt am Main)
The 17th European Football Championship started in Germany the other day. Spectacular competitions and fiercest confrontations take place in different parts of the country. Therefore, in the breaks between matches, fans can enjoy the numerous sights of the Federal Republic of Germany and taste local cuisine. Find out what to see and where to stay for tourists
From June 14 to July 14, Euro 2024 will be held in Germany - a large-scale football competition that unites sports fans from different parts of the world every time. Since the matches will be held in ten different stadiums, the fans got the opportunity to travel between the lands of Germany. For all host cities, this is a chance to introduce fans to their sights, history and culture.
What do tourists do between matches? Where to stay? In the first part of our guide, we talked about the places of interest in Munich, Berlin, Hamburg and Cologne. Today we will talk about three more European football capitals in 2024.
Dortmund
Dortmund is a dynamic city located in the heart of the industrial Ruhr region. It is not only a cultural and technological center, but also one of the capitals of German football. The city is home to the mighty Borussia Dortmund at the BVB Stadion, the largest stadium in the country with a capacity of over 81,000.
The exciting industrial culture of Dortmund and the delicious local delicacies deserve special attention of tourists.
What to see?
Like many cities in Germany, Dortmund suffered a lot during the Second World War, so the architectural monuments in it are mostly restored from ruins. But this does not prevent admiring them, because the Germans scrupulously recreated the former grandeur of all buildings.
Excursions to the "Hanza" coke plant and the Zollern mine are popular. Today, these industrial complexes have been completely converted into a museum, and once they glorified the city and brought it to a high economic position. Speaking about the peculiarities of Dortmund, it is definitely worth noting the presence of unusual transport - large double-decker omnibuses that ply the city streets.
There are good gastronomic establishments in Dortmund, both for economical tourists and for those who prefer haute cuisine.
Highlights: German Football Museum, Dortmunder U, Phoenix des Lumières + Phoenix West galleries, Phoenix Lake and Dortmund pubs.
Where to stay?
Although Dortmund is one of Germany's largest cities, it is generally more affordable to live in than the more touristy cities.
If you're looking for a place to stay near BVB Stadion Dortmund, then check out the Westfalenhalle area. From here, the stadium can be reached in about 5 minutes, and the Friedensplatz fan zone can be reached in 10 minutes by underground.
If you want to stay in the central part of the city, you can find a wide selection of hotels, apartments and hostels in Innenstadt. From here, the Friedensplatz fan zone can be reached in around 10 minutes on foot, and the BVB Stadion Dortmund is just over 15 minutes by metro.
Dusseldorf
Located on the Rhine, Düsseldorf is a city of music (Kraftwerk), great food (Little Tokyo) and chic shopping (Königsallee).
In Dusseldorf, everything is close at hand, which could be expected in the only large German city in the name of which the German word for "village" ("Dorf") has been preserved. However, today's Düsseldorf is far from a village, but a real international metropolis. This transformation can be clearly seen in the local open and cosmopolitan way of life.
Here it is easy to communicate with the locals, and you can also take a break in one of the breweries or on the banks of the Rhine.
What to see?
Duesseldorf is diverse, contrasting, but compact. There is so much to see and experience here: attractions such as Fan Zone Burgplatz, Fan Zone Schauspielhaus, Public Viewing Rheinufer, Spectacular at KöBogen II and Arena Düsseldorf are always worth a visit. There are also many observation decks in Dusseldorf - one in front of the curved facade of the Schauspielhaus theater, as well as two more near the river.
Landmarks: Düsseldorf Altstadt (Old Town), Little Tokyo, Landtag Nordrhein-Westfalen, Königsallee, Fortuna Büdchen.
Where to stay?
Dusseldorf's convenient public transport system means that wherever you stop, you'll never be too far from the stadium or both fan zones. If you want to be in the heart of the action, consider staying in the Stockum area.
The Altstadt (Old Town) is a popular base for visiting Düsseldorf due to its central location and easy connections to the rest of the city. It is home to many popular sights and museums, as well as the Burgplatz fan zone.
Frankfurt am Main
Frankfurt am Main is the financial center of Germany, a cosmopolitan place where every tourist will find a lot of interesting things for themselves. Start your city tour with a tour of the museums located on both banks of the river (Museumsufer) and finish with an apple wine (Apfelwein) in one of the traditional taverns.
What to see?
The historic city center (Römerberg) was rebuilt in 1986 and the new old town (Neue Altstadt) in 2018 according to historical plans. A walk through this area will allow you to look into the history of the city through numerous eras and architectural styles. We also recommend enjoying a scenic walk along the banks of the Main River.
The Eiserner Steg pedestrian bridge is one of the most popular photo spots because of Frankfurt's famous scenery.
Landmarks: Stedelevsky Art Institute, Frankfurt Cathedral, Museum Embankment, Goethe House and Museum.
Where to stay?
As Germany's fifth largest city and one of Europe's busiest transport hubs, Frankfurt has a wealth of budget and luxury accommodation options.
Those who want to stay near the Frankfurt Arena should look for hotels in the area of Frankfurt Airport and Bureaustadt. If you want to find a balance between football and art, stay in the City West or Innenstadt I districts. In the latter you will find the Old Town, the fan zone and the historic Römerberg.
Security measures in Germany in connection with Euro-2024
The German authorities take serious care of security issues within the framework of the tournament, in particular, throughout the country they expect:
- Inviting hundreds of security experts from participating countries to help monitor the process.
- Strengthening checks at the border with Germany since the beginning of June in cooperation with the authorities of neighboring and transit countries.
- Deployment of the army to monitor the local airspace during the tournament.
- Establishment of zones in which drone flights are strictly restricted.
- Strengthening the presence of the police in trains, stations and airports.
As for the negative factors, the authorities expect traffic disruptions and large crowds.
Among the restrictions, the head of security for the tournament said that vehicles will not be allowed into the arenas. Special security borders will be established to check vehicles, bags and tickets. Fans will cover the final part of the way to the match by public transport.
Germany is a wonderful country that hospitably invites all fans to enjoy not only the spectacular competition, but also the local attractions.
