Recently, the Sri Lankan government announced a policy update aimed at simplifying the visa system and attracting investors and tourists. The new policy provides that persons of Sri Lankan origin and their dependents will be able to obtain permanent residence permits, which will allow them to live and work in Sri Lanka.

The initial visa will be valid for 10 years with the possibility of extension. These changes are intended to create more attractive conditions for the return of the Sri Lankan diaspora and the development of the country's economy through investment and tourism. According to statistics, the largest number of expats arrive in Sri Lanka from India, China and Thailand.

Key changes in the procedure for obtaining permanent residence in Sri Lanka

The change in policy in Sri Lanka arose as a result of numerous applications from Sri Lankans living abroad who were unable to obtain dual citizenship due to existing laws in their home countries. In response to these applications, the Department of Immigration and Emigration is developing a new visa scheme.

Under the new rules, persons of Sri Lankan descent or those whose Sri Lankan citizenship has been terminated under the Citizenship Act will be able to apply for a new permanent residence permit. In addition, certain non-Sri Lankan spouses and dependents will also be eligible for this visa.

The main applicant will have to pay USD 1000 for the visa, while the non-Sri Lankan spouse and children will have to pay USD 400 each. This new visa will provide access to permanent residence for persons of Sri Lankan origin and their dependents who were previously unable to apply for dual citizenship.

The BAL (Bureau of Immigration and Emigration) will continue to monitor the implementation of the new visa scheme and will provide updates as new information becomes available. This policy change is an important step to support the Sri Lankan diaspora and facilitate their return to their home country.
