What is a Digital Nomad Visa to Taiwan?

The Taiwan Digital Nomad Visa is a legal way to stay in the country for foreigners who work remotely. It is suitable for freelancers, entrepreneurs and employees whose professional activities are completely related to foreign employers or clients.

It is important to understand that this permit does not give the right to work in Taiwanese companies and is not an immigration program. The visa is designed specifically for temporary stay, and not for moving to permanent residence or subsequent citizenship.

Taiwan Visa Validity Period: What Changed in 2026?

Official update from January 8, 2026:

- The Digital Nomad Visa to Taiwan is issued immediately for a period of up to 2 years;

- The previous model with a short term and subsequent extension is no longer applicable.

This makes Taiwan one of the most attractive destinations for long-term digital nomads in Asia.

Who can get a digital nomad visa for Taiwan: application requirements

Applicants are foreign nationals who meet the following requirements:

1. Financial criteria

Minimum annual income for the last two years:

- from 20,000 USD - for applicants aged 20-29;

- from 40,000 USD - for applicants aged 30 and over.

2. Professional requirements

- proven experience of remote work;

- work under an employment contract with a foreign company or self-employment (freelance, contracts with clients outside Taiwan).

Individuals who already hold a digital nomad visa from another country may also be eligible to apply.

Can I move to Taiwan with my family?

The digital nomad visa does not automatically include family members. If the applicant plans to move with a spouse or children, they usually need to apply for separate residence permits. The type of such permits depends on the citizenship, length of stay and purpose of the visit.

Package of documents for obtaining a digital nomad visa to Taiwan

To submit an application, you must prepare:

- Completed and signed application form;

- International passport (valid for at least 6 months);

- 2 color passport-sized photos;

- Resume or portfolio with confirmation of remote work;

- Employment contract or contracts with clients;

- Description of planned activities in Taiwan;

- Proof of income (certificates, bank statements, payment documents);

- International health insurance for the entire period of stay.

Starting in October 2025, Taiwan is switching to a digital arrival registration system, introducing a new form TWAC (Taiwan Arrival Card). All tourists and business travelers will be required to fill out this electronic form before entering the country. How to apply for a digital nomad visa to Taiwan?

The application is submitted through the Taipei Representative Office (TRO) in the applicant’s country of residence.

1. Check eligibility;

2. Prepare a package of documents;

3. Fill out the online application form;

4. Pay the visa fee;

5. Send or submit the documents in person;

6. Wait for the decision and receive the visa.

The standard processing time is about 15 working days, express – up to 7 days.

Taxes for digital nomads in Taiwan

There is no separate tax for digital nomads in Taiwan, general rules apply.

1. Staying for more than 183 days may result in tax residency status – in this case, taxation of global income is possible.

2. At the same time, for foreigners moving to the country for the first time, there is a tax benefit:

- 50% tax exemption on the part of income over 102,000 USD;

- the benefit can be applied for up to 5 years.
