In most European countries, workers' strikes are a common way to demand better working conditions and higher wages. However, in such situations, usually the service users suffer, most often they are passengers who cannot reach their destinations on time. The advantage is that most protests are agreed upon a few weeks in advance, so people can prepare for possible transport disruptions.

We talked about how to protect yourself from strikes here. Today we have prepared for you a selection of protests in Europe planned for August-September 2024.

Germany

Lufthansa-owned Discover pilots and crew have announced a three-day strike from August 27 to 30, which will affect all of the airline's flights in Germany.

The company has a fleet of 27 aircraft flying from Frankfurt and Munich to destinations in Europe and abroad.

Union officials said they were working to minimize the impact on passengers, but still advised travelers to check the current status of their flight and provide contact details when booking.

Spain

Security workers at Spain's Alicante-Elche airport continue to strike. The first protests were held here from August 1 to 4, and then were extended to August 15, 16, 17, 18, 30 and 31. However, there have been no significant delays in the operation of the airport.

Portugal

Strikes by ground services workers scheduled for August 31 and September 1 may lead to significant disruptions in the work of Portugal's airports. The strike will lead to delays and "numerous flight cancellations", affecting all destinations served by SPdH - Portuguese Handling Services. The airports of Porto and Lisbon are predicted to be the most affected.

Italy

From July 27 to September 5 is the peak holiday season in Italy, so the country's transport sector is prohibited from holding strikes during this period, but several strikes are already planned after it ends:

- Pilots and cabin crew of the Italian airline ITA Airways and the airline Wizz Air plan to strike on September 7, 2024 from 13:00 to 17:00. Air traffic controllers at Rome's Fiumicino Airport and Olbia Airport, as well as baggage workers at Milan Malpensa, Florence Amerigo Vespucci and Pisa Galileo Galilei airports, are also planning to stop working during this period.

- A nationwide strike of railway workers is planned for September 8, 2024 in Italy. Passengers should be prepared for a number of disruptions on this day, as conductors and other staff across Italy are planning a 24-hour strike. It is worth noting that problems can be observed in the movement of not only regional trains, but also intercity ones. Employees of the state company Trenitalia and the private company Italo will go on strike.

- On Monday, September 9, passengers of Italian public transport may already experience work interruptions. The staff of buses, trams and suburban trains throughout the country are planning to strike. Another 24-hour strike of public transport workers is scheduled for September 20.

Netherlands

A large strike of public transport workers in the Netherlands is planned for September 12. Passenger traffic in Amsterdam, The Hague and Rotterdam is expected to be affected by the protests.

Scotland

Rail workers in Scotland could be on strike in the next few weeks as 1,300 ScotRail drivers are locked in a pay dispute with the Aslef union. Dates for potential protests have not yet been announced, so passengers should consider possible delays and check the schedule before traveling.

ScotRail connects major cities such as Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Inverness by train.

Also, we should not forget about a number of strikes that were carried out by workers of the French Autoroutes du Sud (ASF) and Vinci highways during the summer. It is not yet known whether additional protests are planned in the coming weeks, but consider possible strikes when planning trips to France.

It is worth noting that some protests happen suddenly. Therefore, when traveling in Europe, we advise you to monitor the news, pay attention to possible strikes and plan your movements taking into account the changes.
