The results of the US presidential election have made many Americans think about moving abroad. However, a new immigration program in the Italian village of Ollolai on the island of Sardinia allows a foreigner to make their dreams come true, because here you can buy a house for just 1 euro (which converts to 1.06 US dollars).

How to participate in the program? We tell you.

What are the conditions of the program for moving to the village of Ollolai on the island of Sardinia?

To breathe new life into the village and attract a number of expats, Ollolai offers the following programs:

- A house for 1 euro is an opportunity to purchase an old building that needs renovation for a symbolic fee of 1 euro. The estimated cost of renovation ranges from 21,000 to 52,800 US dollars. Buyers are expected to be required to make repairs within three years and may be required to pay a security deposit to prove their commitment.

- Ready-to-move-in homes for up to €100,000 – For expats who want to skip the renovation experience, Ollolai offers ready-to-move-in homes for up to $105,000.

- Free housing for digital nomads – If you’re a digital nomad who dreams of working remotely from the Italian island, Ollolai can provide you with free temporary housing. In exchange, the local authorities expect these digital nomads to make a significant contribution to the community, create some kind of art object, conduct workshops or participate in other projects.

Important! It’s worth noting that Ollolai’s relocation program is distinguished by a high level of support for newcomers. Unlike many relocation schemes, this one comes with a dedicated team to help with all aspects of the move, from property tours and renovation advice to navigating the complicated Italian bureaucracy.

Where to see homes you can buy for €1?

The authorities of the Italian village of Ollolai have developed a special website, Liveinollolai, where foreigners can find out more about the €1 Move program.

Photos and plans of available empty properties will be uploaded to the site in the near future.

Why Ollolai?

The Italian village of Ollolai offers expats a calm, simple lifestyle in one of the blue zones of the world (where people live longer).

The expat relocation program’s website says that Ollolai is the perfect place to reconnect, recharge, and embrace a new way of life.

What is a “blue zone”?

The term “blue zone” was first coined in 2004 to describe centenarians living on the island of Sardinia, Italy. Researchers used blue to shade in parts of a map of the island where people lived longer than the average person. Researchers believe that diet and lifestyle are key factors in the “blue zone.”

Since then, the term “blue zone” has expanded to include several regions of the world where more people live to be 100, although some researchers believe that this theory is based on unreliable data.

Who would be interested in moving to the Sardinian island of Ollolai?

Italian authorities say the offer could be of interest to people of all ages, retirees, remote workers or entrepreneurs who want to open a small business in the village.

How many Americans already live on the island of Ollolai?

Ollolai first started offering houses for 1 euro back in 2018, and since then 10 houses have been sold for 1 euro. Four Americans are temporarily living in the village under a digital nomad program designed specifically for Americans.

However, the mayor of the city claims that the city hall website was recently flooded with 38,000 requests for information about houses. The vast majority of them were from citizens of the United States of America.

Italy has been actively encouraging foreigners to move to their villages for many years

The Ollolaia village program is not new - it is part of an ongoing campaign across Italy aimed at combating population decline.

In 2022, the island of Sardinia already offered new residents about $ 15,000 to move to them.

Also this summer, the authorities of the Italian region of Tuscany launched the program “Residenzialità in Montagna 2024” (“Residenzialità in Montagna 2024”), which was aimed at encouraging relocation to small towns experiencing depopulation. The program started in early June and covered 76 villages. The authorities offered foreigners grants in the amount of 10,000 to 30,000 euros to help with the costs of buying and repairing real estate. Certain regions of Italy also already have experience selling houses for 1 euro.

Let us remind you! Living in Italy is a dream for many people, as the country offers a high quality of life, amazing cuisine, stunning scenery, and many other benefits. We have already talked about the pros and cons of living in Italy, as well as affordable ways to move.
