What is the South African ETA?

ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) is a digital permit that allows visitors to South Africa to apply online, without having to go through the traditional visa procedure. The system is designed for short-term travel for tourism, business or family visits.

Key features

- Valid for up to 90 days with a single extension of 90 days.

- Allows multiple entries within the validity period.

- Integrated with the passport and includes a QR code for quick verification.

- Does not convert to a work or study permit;

- Stored in Google Wallet and Apple Wallet or as a PDF.

How will the ETA be implemented in South Africa?

The ETA will be launched in several phases:

- October 2025 – the system will be operational for diplomats from China, India, Indonesia and Mexico arriving for the G20 Summit via Johannesburg and Cape Town International Airports.

- November 2025 – The ETA requirement will be extended to all citizens of these four countries visiting South Africa for tourism or business.

- Long term – the system will cover all travelers from visa-required countries, as well as those exempted from visas, to expedite border checks. The plan is to expand to all airports, land and sea ports of entry.

Important! An ETA must be obtained prior to arrival in South Africa. It will not be possible to apply after crossing the border – travelers without prior authorization will be denied entry.

How to apply for an ETA in South Africa?

The application will be completely online. The process will include:

- registration on the official portal;

- real-time selfie for biometrics;

- uploading a passport photo;

- filling in a short questionnaire;

- submitting the application and receiving a decision in real time.

The approved ETA will be available in PDF format and can be saved in mobile wallets.

In addition, all travelers must complete an online customs declaration on the South African Revenue Service (SARS) portal.

Why did South Africa introduce the ETA system?

The South African government says the new ETA system will:

1. Simplify the entry process and reduce bureaucracy;

2. Speed up border checks through QR codes and automated gates;

3. Promote tourism and investment;

4. Improve security through the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning.

The ETA in South Africa is in line with the global trend towards digital mobility control systems. Similar permits are already in operation in the UK, Kenya, Israel and a number of other countries.

An ETA will become a mandatory entry requirement for foreigners traveling to South Africa for tourism or business purposes. Those planning to visit the country after October 2025 should follow the government’s updates and prepare for the transition to a new travel format.
