The Greenest Cities in the World 2026: Ranking of Sustainable Megacities
New study shows that even large cities can be environmentally sustainable. Find out which cities topped the ranking of the greenest in the world
Modern megacities can be not only comfortable to live in, but also environmentally responsible. This is proven by the new Green City Index study by Reinders Corporation, which identified the most sustainable cities on the planet according to a number of key “green” indicators.
The results of the rating are pleasantly surprising: in the top are large economic and tourist centers that successfully combine infrastructure development, environmental care and quality of life for residents.
The rating of the most environmentally friendly cities in the world is in this article.

How were the most environmentally friendly cities determined?
During the study, experts analyzed the cities of the world according to six main criteria, each of which had different weights depending on the impact on sustainable development:
- quality of green areas and plantings;
- use of renewable energy;
- air quality;
- development of public transport;
- convenience of the city for cyclists;
- presence of tourist and environmental taxes.
It is not only about the presence of parks or squares, but also about how effectively the city functions simultaneously for people and the planet. The higher the final score, the more environmentally sustainable the city is considered.
Vancouver is the leader of the world ranking
The first place in the ranking was taken by Vancouver (Canada), which scored 101.71 points. The city became an example of how environmental policy, innovation and a comfortable urban environment can coexist harmoniously.
Canada generally showed high results: Montreal (7th place) and Toronto (9th place) also entered the top ten, which indicates the country's systematic approach to sustainable urban development.
European cities - among the world leaders
Europe confidently holds the position of one of the most environmentally friendly regions in the world. The second and third places in the ranking were taken by:
- Oslo (Norway) – 100.57 points;
- Stockholm (Sweden) – 94.87 points.
The top 10 also included Munich, Zurich and Copenhagen – cities that have long invested in “green” transport, renewable energy and emission reduction.
London: A metropolis that has become an “urban forest”
At first glance, London is hardly a green city: over the past ten years, more than 270 skyscrapers have been built here, and about 600 more are planned. However, the capital of Great Britain took 10th place in the world ranking with a score of 66.85 points.
More than 20% of London’s territory is occupied by trees, which is why some experts even call it an “urban forest”. In addition, the city demonstrates positive dynamics in the field of sustainable transport:
- Public transport — 64.5 points out of 100;
- Convenience for cyclists — 49.7 points;
- The number of bicycle trips increased by 12.7% in just one year.

As Gerrit Jan Reinders, CEO of Reinders Corporation, noted, understanding which megacities are succeeding in sustainable development is critically important in the face of climate change and urban growth.
The study confirms that an environmentally friendly lifestyle and a dynamic modern city can successfully develop together – even in large historical capitals.
