Spain remains one of the most popular destinations for remote workers from around the world. However, since the beginning of 2026, the financial conditions for obtaining a Digital Nomad Visa have changed significantly — the minimum income threshold has increased along with the minimum wage in the country.

How much do you need to earn now, who is eligible for this visa, and what does the application process look like? We will tell you more in this article.

Are you planning to work remotely from Spain or another country but don't know where to start with the visa application process?

Visit World's guide for digital nomads contains step-by-step instructions, a list of documents, applicant requirements, and all the details of the visa process for your chosen country.

What income do you need to prove for a Digital Nomad Visa in Spain in 2026?

The financial threshold for obtaining a digital nomad visa in Spain directly depends on the minimum wage. In February 2026, this rate increased, which automatically led to higher requirements for applicants.

Now, a single applicant must prove a monthly income of EUR 2,849. Those who apply with their family must take into account additional amounts: approximately EUR 1,070 per spouse and about EUR 360 per child. Thus, a family of three — two adults and one child — must confirm a monthly income of approximately EUR 4,280.

Important detail! Applicants whose income is slightly below the established threshold still have a chance of receiving a positive decision. To do this, they must demonstrate that they have sufficient savings to cover the costs for the entire period of the residence permit, which can be up to three years.

Who can apply: basic conditions of the program for digital nomads in Spain

The Spanish Digital Nomad Visa program is aimed at professionals who work remotely for foreign companies or freelance with clients outside Spain. The key requirement is that no more than 20% of the applicant's income can come from Spanish sources. This clearly distinguishes the status of a digital nomad from regular employment in the country.

Other mandatory conditions include having medical insurance, proof of qualifications (a higher education diploma or at least three years of professional experience in the relevant field), and no criminal record. It is worth noting that you can apply even while in Spain — for example, if you entered the country on a regular Schengen visa. This makes the procedure much more convenient, as the applicant can collect the necessary documents on the spot and go through all the stages of registration.

What does a digital nomad visa give you: rights and prospects for living in Spain

A residence permit under the Digital Nomad Visa program is initially issued for a period of one year, after which it can be extended. The visa holder is granted the right to legally reside in Spain and work remotely without entering the local labor market. It is also possible to move with family members.

In the long term, the program opens the way to permanent residence in Spain after five years of staying in the country. And after ten years, the right to apply for Spanish citizenship appears. This makes the Digital Nomad Visa attractive not only as a temporary solution but also as the first step towards full integration into a European country.

How long does it take to obtain a digital nomad visa in Spain?

The average duration of the entire process is three to four months. This period covers the preparation and collection of documents, the submission of the application, its consideration by the competent authorities, and the receipt of a residence card (TIE). Given the possible increase in financial thresholds in the future — after all, income requirements automatically increase along with the minimum wage — it is not worth delaying the submission of documents.

Budget planning should also take into account not only monthly income, but also the cost of health insurance, visa fees, and possible additional expenses for apostille and document translation.
