A recent study that analyzed almost 100,000 reviews of 200 popular attractions in the world's 50 most visited countries showed that the gap between expectations and reality can be quite significant. Researchers from Radical Storage took as a basis a list of almost 6,000 attractions, formed on the basis of the EuroMonitor Top 100 City Destinations and Mastercard Global Cities Index reports. Properties with fewer than 2,000 reviews were excluded from the list, and locations in Russia, Ukraine, and Israel were not included due to ongoing hostilities. As a result, 90 keywords that most often appear in negative reviews were selected for analysis – from "boring" to "overrated" – and false matches such as the phrase "did not disappoint" were filtered out.

Crowds, prices and high expectations

The main reasons for tourists' dissatisfaction were three factors: overcrowding of locations, high prices and impressions that turned out to be more modest than the advertising hype around the object. Interestingly, it is not only about individual attractions - the researchers also assessed the tourist attractiveness of countries as a whole.

The leaders of the anti-rating in terms of the share of disappointed visitors were two countries at once - the United Kingdom and Canada, both with 7.9% of negative reviews. The top three are closed by the USA with an indicator of 7.5%. Among the cities, the most disappointing for tourists are Seattle (8.9% of negative reviews), Budapest (6.3%), London and Bangkok (6% each). It is noteworthy that six of the ten most disappointing tourist attractions in the world are located in North America.

The amusement park that didn’t live up to expectations

For the second year in a row, the Alton Towers amusement park in Staffordshire, England, has topped the anti-rating list. This time, 38.2% of reviews about the park were negative – the highest figure among all the locations surveyed, although last year the figure was even worse: 49.4%. That is, some improvement has nevertheless occurred.

It is not the quality of the attractions that annoy visitors the most, but the level of service and the hidden cost of entertainment. It was Alton Towers that received the record number of complaints about the value for money – 15% of all reviews, while the average figure in the study is only 1.3%. Guests also complained about the confusing conditions of ticket sales and the need to pay extra for food, drinks or access to certain areas of the park.

In second place is the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta, one of the most famous in the world, home to tens of thousands of marine life. Despite this, 19.6% of reviews about it are negative: 10% of visitors complained about the excessive number of people, another 6.2% believed that the experience was not worth the price of the ticket.

The Horseshoe Casino in Louisiana closes the top three with 18.6% of negative reviews. Despite a wide range of entertainment options - from table games to a 24-hour burger bar - 16.6% of dissatisfied guests described the establishment as "boring", "worn out" or "in need of renovation".

European and Asian locations also hit the negative rating

Europe was not spared the criticism. The Széchenyi Baths in Budapest – the largest thermal spa complex on the continent and one of the main reasons to visit the Hungarian capital – received 16.6% negative reviews. The main complaint of tourists is overcrowding: 7.2% of visitors mentioned it, compared to an average of 2.1% across the entire study.

Ripley's Aquarium of Canada in Toronto, located near the famous CN Tower, came in fifth with 16% negative reviews. Crowds were also the biggest problem here (9.6% of complaints), and 5% of guests considered the price to be unjustified.

Overall, the top 10 most disappointing tourist attractions in the world also included Universal Islands of Adventure in Orlando (15.6%), Siam Park in Tenerife (13.4%), the Space Needle in Seattle (12.6%), Graceland in Memphis (12.6%) and Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto (12%). The average share of negative reviews among all locations studied was 5.2% - so these listed attractions significantly exceed the usual level of traveler dissatisfaction.
