Ski trips are planned months in advance, and the one thing everyone wants to be sure of is that there will actually be snow when they arrive. Euronews reports on a new study by the British tour operator Inghams Ski, whose analysts looked at more than 100 resorts and regions across the Northern Hemisphere to find out where skiing conditions stay the most consistent.

If you are looking for ski resorts with reliable snow, this ranking offers a clear point of reference: the top three places went to Pontedilegno-Tonale in Italy, Obertauern in Austria and Les Arcs in France. Below, we look at how the scores were calculated, what is known about the leaders and what’s new for skiers in the 2026/27 season.

How does the Inghams Reliable Ski Rating work?

Scores were given on a 100-point scale, and snow itself is only one of the factors. The biggest weight, 35%, went to the share of lifts and runs operating during the heart of the season. Another 25% depended on how many days in the main period had at least 30 cm of snow at the base station. Consistency from one winter to the next added 20%, the gap between an average and the worst season 12%, and average snow depth on the mountain the remaining 8%.

The researchers looked at the period from 5 January to 20 March across seven winter seasons between 2017/18 and 2025/26. Winters affected by Covid-19 were left out of the calculation.

Important! As Euronews stresses, no resort can promise perfect conditions for a specific week, so the ranking shows probability rather than a guarantee.

Top 10 most snow-reliable ski resorts in Europe

Here is how the scores were distributed among the top ten:

- Pontedilegno-Tonale, Italy: 93.1

- Obertauern, Austria: 92.9

- Les Arcs, France: 92.2

- Les 3 Vallées, France: 91.1

- Alpe d’Huez, France: 90.5

- Kitzsteinhorn, Austria: 89.6

- Filzmoos, Austria: 89.5

- Tignes–Val d’Isère, France: 89.4

- Espace San Bernardo (La Rosière / La Thuile), France and Italy: 89.2

- Damüls-Mellau, Austria: 89.1

The list includes five French resorts, four Austrian and one Italian, although Espace San Bernardo straddles the border between France and Italy.

Pontedilegno-Tonale: Presena Glacier and upgraded lifts

The ranking’s leader sits on the border between Lombardy and Trentino, between the Valcamonica and Val di Sole valleys. The area takes in Ponte di Legno, Passo del Tonale, Temù and the Presena Glacier: more than 100 km of runs at altitudes from roughly 1,100 to 3,000 metres and about thirty lifts. According to Inghams, the resort performed consistently well across all criteria, so skiers can explore the slopes without worrying about running out of snow.

Different parts of the area have different characters. The slopes of Ponte di Legno wind through pine and spruce forest, while Passo del Tonale sits at the foot of the Presena Glacier. The boldest can ski from the glacier down to Ponte di Legno, almost 11 km with a vertical drop of about two kilometres. Early risers will like the Alba in Quota format: on selected days the lifts open earlier so skiing at altitude can begin at sunrise.

The 2026/27 season is expected, according to preliminary information, to run from 21 November to 2 May. Last winter the area welcomed almost a million skiers, a 3% increase. For the new season, the Valbiolo chairlift at Passo del Tonale is due to be replaced by a ten-seat gondola carrying 3,200 people an hour instead of 2,000. On the Paradiso, the main route up to the Presena Glacier, new cabins with interior ski racks have been installed. The Ponte di Legno project, where a new gondola is being built on Corno d’Aola, will be completed by winter 2027/28, together with a mountain refuge with a panoramic terrace at the top station.

The Obertauern season: November to May

The resort in the Salzburg region sits at more than 1,700 metres in a high-alpine bowl of the Radstädter Tauern. More than 100 km of runs are served by 26 lifts, and according to skiresort.info a large share of them are easy runs, so beginners and experienced skiers alike will find slopes to suit them. The well-known Tauernrunde circuit can be joined from any point in the area. Hotels here have direct access to the slopes, and cross-country fans have trails from 6 to 23 km long.

The season is set to start on 20 November 2026 and run until 2 May 2027. The opening will be marked by Ski Opening Week, from 27 November to 8 December: the German band Die Fantastischen Vier (28 November) and singer Anastacia (4 December) will take the stage.

Les Arcs and Paradiski: from 200 to 425 km of runs

Bronze went to France’s Les Arcs. The Aiguille Rouge peak reaches 3,226 metres, and the resort’s own runs stretch for around 200 km. It is made up of several villages at different altitudes: Arc 1600 is considered the family one, Arc 1800 is known for its nightlife, and Arc 2000 is the highest and closest to the toughest slopes. From the town of Bourg-Saint-Maurice, a funicular takes seven minutes to reach Arc 1600. Experienced skiers love the steep Couloir en S, with a gradient of up to 45 degrees, and the 7 km descent from the Aiguille Rouge to Villaroger.

Les Arcs is part of Paradiski, one of the largest linked ski areas in the world, which also includes Peisey-Vallandry and La Plagne. The Vanoise Express cable car runs between Les Arcs and La Plagne, and the crossing takes about four minutes. Together the three resorts offer 425 km of runs at altitudes from 1,200 to 3,250 metres. To ski on both sides you need a Paradiski lift pass, not just a Les Arcs one. The winter season here starts on 12 December 2026 and runs until 24 April 2027.

What else is in the top 10 and how to pick a resort for your style?

The rest of the list is no accident either. France’s Les 3 Vallées, which includes Courchevel, Méribel and Val Thorens, is usually described as the largest linked ski area in the world. Austria’s Kitzsteinhorn, above the town of Kaprun, is known for its glacier and is one of the first in the country to open for the season: according to the Austrian tourist board’s announcement, as early as 10 October. Filzmoos in the Salzburg region and Damüls-Mellau in Vorarlberg are less hyped, but they lose only a few points to the leader.

When choosing among the best ski resorts in Europe, look at more than just ranking position. For a huge area with several valleys, Les 3 Vallées or Paradiski fit; for glacier fans and an early start, Kitzsteinhorn or Presena; and for stepping from your hotel straight onto the slopes, Obertauern. Check current opening dates before booking: weather can push them back.

Travel insurance for ski trips: what to look out for?

A fall on the slope or a collision with a snowboarder is part of any ski season, and treatment abroad can be expensive. In many Alpine resorts, mountain rescue is a separate cost: the search, the descent from the mountain or a helicopter is often paid for by the injured person. So before you travel, read the terms of your travel insurance carefully. Check whether skiing and snowboarding are included in the cover (often it’s a separate option), whether restrictions apply to off-piste skiing and whether evacuation and transport to hospital are covered. Also look at what happens in the event of a cancelled trip and lost luggage.

Alpine winter resorts attract with snow and speed, but skiing carries a risk of injury. Depending on the plan, Visit World travel insurance can cover emergency medical care, hospitalisation, emergency evacuation, lost belongings and trip cancellation. Before buying, check the terms for winter sports and off-piste skiing. Choose your policy online at Visit World and hit the slopes protected.
