For the tourism market of Vietnam, 2022 has become completely unprofitable. Despite the fact that the state was one of the first countries in Southeast Asia to lift all quarantine restrictions, only 70% of the planned number of foreign tourists came to the country.
How many tourists visited Vietnam in 2022?
In Vietnam, 2019 was a record year for the number of tourists. At that time, 18 million foreigners visited the country. In contrast, only 3.6 million travelers vacationed in Vietnam in 2022.
The main number of tourists (70%) were citizens of Asian countries - 2.59 million vacationers. The second place was occupied by European countries - 508,000 visitors and America - 388,000 tourists.
As in previous years, Vietnam lags far behind its neighbors in terms of the number of tourists received. For comparison, 10.9 million travelers arrived in Thailand and 5.37 million people in Singapore. Malaysia and Indonesia also reached the planned maximum number of visitors in 2022.

Tourism in Vietnam: forecasts for 2023
The leadership of Vietnam determined that one of the reasons for the low tourist flow is the complexity of the country's visa legislation. The Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Vietnam, Nguyen Van Hung, called for issuing electronic visas to citizens of all countries of the world. Currently, this procedure is available only to citizens of 80 countries. The politician also proposed to increase the permitted duration of a tourist's visa-free stay to 30 days (now this period is 15 days).
In Vietnam, it is hoped that the number of Chinese tourists will increase in 2023, because the Chinese government lifted travel restrictions for its citizens on January 8, 2023.
