World cities with the best public transportation: travel destinations for 2023
As part of a study by guidebook publisher Time Out, the world's cities with the best public transportation have been ranked. Find out more about the cities that made the list and became leaders in Europe and Asia
Time Out, a guidebook publisher, surveyed 20,000 people in 50 cities around the world to find out their attitudes toward the local public transportation system. The result showed that the most comfortable transportation is in Europe and Asia, as the cities of these continents made the list.
The rating will be useful for tourists who are choosing a destination for their next trip. After all, comfortable and understandable public transportation in a new city makes it easier to get around, so you will avoid negative emotions.
The German capital is at the top of the list. In addition to it, the ranking includes 18 other cities, among which, by the way, there are no cities in Australia, Africa, or South America.

Features of public transport in Asia
Seven out of 19 cities recognized for their public transportation systems are located in Asia.
Tokyo, in third place, showed the best result on the continent. Public transportation is praised for its efficient and easy navigation, comprehensibility for those who do not speak Japanese, and high quality of service. And Mumbai, ranked 19th, introduced a new program called Chalo Pay, which makes it easier to book and pay for travel tickets without cash.
The best transport in Europe
Great Britain became the absolute champion, as two cities in the ranking - London and Edinburgh - are located on this peninsula.
European cities are recognized for their unified payment system that covers various forms of transit. The possibility of transferring between buses, trains, and trams, such as in Amsterdam, is also highlighted.
The European Union is actively developing sustainable development initiatives, so residents and visitors to cities are encouraged to use environmentally friendly public transport. By using a tram, train, or bicycle, tourists can see all the sights and reduce their carbon footprint at the same time.
What was evaluated when compiling the rating?
First of all, the surveyed citizens must admit that it is easy for them to get around the city using public transportation - more than 80% of respondents must do so.
For example, Berlin, which tops the ranking, satisfies 97% of the local population. According to Time Out, this is the number of Berliners who spoke positively about the transport infrastructure, including its reliability, comfort, and safety.
The evaluation also paid attention to aesthetics. Stockholm, which is known for its picturesque subway, can be singled out. Tourists go down into the Swedish subway to enjoy the bright and unusual designs - it's not for nothing that the stations are called "the longest art exhibition in the world."
Not only the subway is recognized for its beauty. Hong Kong's famous land trains have been given their own Pantone color - "HK Tram Green". Undoubtedly, this fact attracts the attention of the local population and becomes the city's business card.
