Luxembourg is a tiny and cozy country in the heart of Europe, boasting a developed economy, political stability, high living standards and decent salaries. And this is not surprising, as Luxembourg is ranked second in the ranking of the richest countries in the world. Half of Luxembourg's labor force is immigrant. According to statistics, most expatriate workers come to Luxembourg from Portugal, France, Belgium and Germany.

So, let's find out in more detail whether it is easy to find a job for a foreigner in Luxembourg?

Features of the labor market in Luxembourg for foreigners in 2024

In order to get a job in Luxembourg, a candidate needs to go through several mandatory stages:

The employer submits an application to a special state authority about the intention to hire a foreign citizen;

The vacancy is placed in the public domain for at least 3 weeks. If during this period no citizens of Luxembourg or other EU states express a desire to be employed or do not meet the employer's requirements, only then can the employer hire a foreign national;

1. Obtaining a work permit for a foreign employee to be employed by the employer;

2. Signing a contract, applying for a work visa and obtaining a temporary residence permit.

In Luxembourg, it is impossible to arrive in the country first and only then start looking for a job. A migrant may be deported for such a gross violation of the law. Start the job search process while at home. For the convenience of employees, employers in Luxembourg can provide free meals and accommodation for the adaptation process, and always pay overtime.

Job searches for foreigners in Luxembourg

As mentioned earlier, citizens of Luxembourg and other EU countries always have an advantage in the employment process. Therefore, in order to get a chance to be employed in such a fiercely competitive environment, applicants from other countries must have work experience, relevant education, as well as the necessary skills and competencies.

You can also find low-skilled jobs in Luxembourg. Such vacancies do not require language skills, special skills or education, but the salary in this case will be significantly lower. The main thing is to have the physical strength and endurance to perform complex, monotonous tasks. But even for such jobs, there is high competition.

Among the most popular and available vacancies in Luxembourg for foreigners are the following industries:

1. IT and programming;

2. Logistics and transportation;

3. Construction;

4. Management and administration;

5. Banking;

6. Hospitality and tourism;

7. Agriculture;

8. Household and household assistance;

9. Childcare.

Employment procedure for foreign workers in Luxembourg 2024

EU citizens have the right to work freely in Luxembourg. Residents of other countries must go through a list of mandatory procedures before arriving. It is very difficult to find an employer and persuade him/her to conclude an employment contract, as Luxembourg employs numerous highly qualified Europeans with higher education.

To hire a foreigner, an employer must submit a vacancy to the National Employment Administration (ADEM). If no citizens of Luxembourg or other EU countries respond to the vacancy within 3 weeks, it is possible to hire a candidate from other countries.

Foreign workers are required to pass a medical examination and provide documentary evidence of their qualifications and education. After signing the contract, the candidate can obtain a work permit, a work visa, and a residence permit.

Circus performers, nannies, caregivers, and housekeepers can work without a work permit; a simple employment contract will suffice.

After signing the employment contract, the employee needs to apply to the Consulate of Luxembourg for a temporary residence permit and a work visa.

Obtaining a work visa for foreigners in Luxembourg

Foreigners who come to Luxembourg for a period of more than 90 days for the purpose of employment are required to obtain a work visa. This is the next step after signing an employment contract with an employer.

In order to obtain a work visa, you must submit an application to the Consulate of Luxembourg with the following package of documents:

1. A completed application form;

2. Foreign passport with at least two blank pages;

3. 2 color photos 35x45 mm;

4. Payment of the visa fee;

5. Medical insurance policy with a coverage of 30 thousand euros for the entire period of the trip;

6. A copy of the national passport;

7. A copy of the official invitation letter from the employer;

8. A copy of the signed employment contract.

Temporary residence permit for employment of foreigners in Luxembourg 2024

Temporary residence permits are issued by the Luxembourg Department for Foreigners. There are currently four categories of permits:

1. A - issued for a period of up to 12 months with the possibility of employment for 1 vacancy;

2. B - issued for a period of up to 4 years with the possibility of employment for 1 vacancy;

3. C - issued for an unlimited period with the possibility of employment for various vacancies;

4. D - issued for an unlimited period for study or practice.

In order to obtain a temporary residence permit, an application with the following list of documents must be submitted to the Luxembourg Department of Foreigners:

1. Birth certificate;

2. A copy of the national passport;

3. A copy of the foreign passport;

4. Copies of documents confirming the level of education and qualifications;

5. Resume and short autobiography;

6. Motivation letter;

7. Certificate of no criminal record;

8. A copy of the employment contract signed with the employer;

9. ADEM certificate of the right to work.

Thus, Luxembourg is a highly developed country with a stable economy, political security and high living standards. It will not be easy for foreigners to find a job here, they will need to go through various bureaucratic stages and draw up a lot of documents. However, in return, labor migrants will receive high salaries, government benefits, developed infrastructure, comfortable living conditions and excellent career opportunities.
