1. Costa Rica. Global Peace Index: 1.73

According to the Global Peace Index, Costa Rica is recognised as the safest country in Latin America, ranking 39th in the world's security rankings. This Central American country has always attracted the attention of tourists for its safety, peaceful political climate, and low crime rate.

Costa Rica not only guarantees a high level of security, but is also famous for its incredible natural beauty: tropical forests, clean beaches, volcanic hot springs, and rich cultural communities. Despite the high level of security, as in any country, there is a risk of theft. So, despite the safety, tourists are advised to be careful and take care of their valuables, especially in crowded tourist areas. Costa Rica remains an ideal destination for those seeking not only adventure but also a high level of security in Latin America.

2. Uruguay. Global Peace Index: 1.8

Uruguay is recognised as the second-safest country in Latin America, coming in a close second to Costa Rica. Its reputation for political stability attracts tourists, who can enjoy visiting cities and cultural centres without worrying about political demonstrations or violent events.

Uruguay is also known for having the highest GDP per capita among South American countries, which indicates a high level of prosperity. This creates less motivation for petty crime and theft.

Nevertheless, caution is always important. Although Uruguay is one of the top 50 safest countries in the world according to the Global Peace Index, tourists should exercise personal caution to protect their valuables. With an abundance of cultural attractions in Montevideo and natural beauty, Uruguay provides a safe and peaceful environment for guests to enjoy the uniqueness of Latin America.

3. Argentina. Global Peace Index: 1.84

Like neighbouring Uruguay, Argentina is one of the safest countries in Latin America and is ranked 54th in the world, according to the Global Peace Index. What's more, Argentina is even more popular as a tourist destination than its neighbour, thanks to its natural landscapes, which include the Andes Mountains, the Pampas grasslands and Iguazu Falls.

Although Argentina is comparable to Uruguay in terms of safety for tourists, it is still inferior to its neighbouring country due to the fact that it has a slightly higher level of political instability and political demonstrations, although not very frequent, can still occur.

Fortunately, Argentina still promises a sufficient level of security for tourists who come here, and the biggest risk to tourist safety is petty crime and theft. In addition, these crimes are concentrated around popular urban tourist areas such as Buenos Aires and Rosario.

4. Chile. Global Peace Index: 1.87

Chile, once recognised as the safest country in Latin America, has experienced a slight deterioration in its Global Peace Index due to inconsistent government efforts to reform the police force following the 2019 crackdown. Nevertheless, compared to other South American countries, Chile remains a relatively safe destination for tourists, especially outside urban centres.

The most serious threats relate to civil unrest in densely populated urban areas. Political protests and demonstrations are the main source of security risk. However, the vast majority of Chile's tourist destinations, including the countryside, remain relatively calm and maintain the country's security.

The incidence of petty theft is concentrated mainly in large cities such as Santiago. It should be noted that the most attractive places for tourists, such as Torres del Paine National Park, the Atacama Desert and Easter Island, remain in non-urban areas, providing peace and security for tourists who want to enjoy the natural beauty of Chile.

5. Panama. Global Peace Index: 1.94

Panama, despite the decreased level of security due to civil unrest, remains a beautiful and safe travel destination. It is the fifth-safest country in Latin America and the second safest in Central America.

Most political protests take place in Panama City, while other tourist centres in the country remain calm. Travelling to regions less affected by political unrest is recommended, especially the San Blas Islands. There is a sense of political isolation here, creating ideal conditions for a safe and enjoyable holiday.

6. Paraguay. Global Peace Index: 1.94

Tied with Panama for the top spot on the Global Peace Index (1.94), Paraguay offers a unique tourist experience. Although the country is not as popular as its Latin American neighbours, it attracts with its lack of tourist crowds and unique exploration experiences.

Paraguay, despite having a less developed tourist infrastructure, guarantees fewer crowds while providing a relative sense of security. With affordable travel costs, you can enjoy authentic adventures.

However, it is important to be careful about possible petty theft, especially in large cities. Keeping your valuables safe can help you avoid trouble. It is noted that road traffic standards can be a challenge for those who are not used to dangerous tactics of drivers. In this case, it is better to refrain from renting a car or motorbike and opt for efficient and safe means of public transport.

7. Bolivia. Global Peace Index: 2

Perhaps the cheapest country in South America to visit, Bolivia is ranked seventh among the safest countries in Latin America. Although the country has experienced civil unrest, most of Bolivia's attractions are centred around natural areas, free from the political demonstrations that can occur in more urbanised regions.

However, like any other country, there are regions in Bolivia that are best avoided, most notably the large cities of El Alto and La Paz. As with most large cities, these areas are known for petty crime and pickpocketing, so extra care should be taken when visiting. However, when visiting less urbanised areas, such as the Uyuni salt flats or the regions around the Amazon rainforest, you shouldn't be too concerned about these crimes.

Another thing to watch out for when visiting Bolivia is the country's state of militarisation. Although this does not affect tourists, it does create a sense of insecurity and requires more careful planning to avoid roadblocks.

8. Dominican Republic. Global Peace Index: 2.02

Ranked the eighth-safest country in Latin America on the Global Peace Index (2.02), the Dominican Republic is a fascinating Caribbean destination. With beautiful beaches, white sand, palm trees and luxury hotels, this country attracts tourists as a renowned resort.

However, it is important that travellers exercise caution when travelling outside the main resorts in cities such as Punta Cana, Santo Domingo and Playa Dorada. Conditions of civil unrest and high levels of poverty can lead to petty theft and even armed robberies.

However, if you avoid travelling away from the main tourist areas and use only hotel-provided transport, most such crimes can be avoided. Overall, the Dominican Republic remains an attractive resort located on the shores of the Caribbean Sea and provides a high level of security.

9. Ecuador. Global Peace Index: 2.1

The latest changes in the Global Peace Index show a decrease in the level of security in Ecuador, moving the country from 73rd to 97th place in the world. This decline is mainly due to civil unrest and protests aimed at solving economic and social problems.

To avoid potential risks, it is recommended to refrain from visiting large urban areas and pay attention to tourist centres where security is higher, such as Otavalo, Banos and Cuenca.

In addition to political instability, you should be wary of robberies, especially in tourist centres such as Quito. Despite this, the country offers excellent tourist destinations, among which the safe Galápagos Islands are identified. Located more than 1,000 km from the mainland, they provide a sense of isolation from conflict and continue to attract tourists with their safe and welcoming atmosphere.

10. Cuba. Global Peace Index: 2.1

Famous for its beautiful white sand beaches that meander into the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea, Cuba has long been one of the world's top holiday destinations.

And although many holidaymakers advise not to leave the resort while visiting the island, Cuba has become one of the safest countries in Latin America in recent years.

A tour of the colonial buildings of Havana and a hike through the Vinales Valley are among the most popular activities on the island. However, as in all major tourist cities, petty theft can occur when visiting the capital. It is important to be cautious and secure your valuables when travelling outside the main resort areas.
