What are the ABC Islands in the Caribbean?

The ABC islands, which include Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao, are part of the Leeward Islands in the Caribbean Sea, located north of Venezuela. These islands were discovered in May 1499 by the navigator Alonso de Ojeda, but the discovery is officially attributed to Amerigo Vespucci, whose cartographer first described these territories in detail.

The ABC Islands are located on the border of two continents: historically they belong to North America, but geographically they are located in South America. From west to east, these islands are located in the following order: Aruba, Curacao and Bonaire. All three islands are part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, with different statuses: Aruba and Curacao are autonomous entities with self-government, while Bonaire is governed as a special municipality of the Netherlands.

These islands are similar in status to the SSS-islands, which include Saba, St. Eustatius and St. Maarten. The first two are also special municipalities of the Netherlands, while St. Maarten is a self-governing part of the Kingdom. The ABC islands are popular tourist destinations due to their beautiful beaches, crystal clear waters and rich history.
