Cinque Terre, which means “Five Lands” in Italian, is a national park in Italy located on the coast of the Gulf of Genoa. The park includes five picturesque towns: Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso al Mare. In 1997, these unique landscapes were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, which emphasizes their cultural and natural value.

What is the Cinque Terre?

Cinque Terre is a picturesque national park on the east coast of Liguria, in the province of Spezia. This unique corner of Italy includes five medieval villages: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. The area is famous for its steep rocky shores that impress with their majesty and beauty.

In the Cinque Terre, car traffic is prohibited in all villages except Monterosso, which preserves the authentic atmosphere. Due to its historical and natural value, the region was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997, along with Porto Venere and the surrounding islands.

5 picturesque villages of the Cinque Terre

The Cinque Terre is one of Italy's most charming national parks, with five vibrant villages located along the coast. Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, and Monterosso - each of these places has its own unique charm. Monterosso

Monterosso al Mare is a place where the Italian writer Eugenio Montale, winner of the 1975 Nobel Prize, found inspiration. He often spent his summers here, describing Monterosso as “a harsh town on the rocks, a haven for fishermen and farmers.” 

The village has a rich history that is reflected in ancient structures such as the lookout tower, the current bell tower of the Church of St. Giovanni, and the Aurora Tower, the only remaining one of the thirteen that once protected the village. To get to Corniglia, you need to climb the famous Lardarina staircase, consisting of 382 steps, or take a bus from the station. 

The name of the village comes from the name of the farmer Corneliu, who was a respected winemaker. In Corneliu, you can visit the Gothic Church of St. Peter, the XVIII century square and the chapel of St. Catherine. This village also has a picturesque wild beach with crystal clear waters.

1. The narrow streets of Cornelia. This rural corner has preserved its authentic Italian charm with its narrow streets and small squares. A walk along these streets gives you the opportunity to enjoy the magnificent views of the Ligurian Sea;

At the top of the village is the Gothic church of St. Lorenzo, built in 1338, with three naves and a magnificent Baroque interior. In addition, you can visit the neighboring villages of Groppa and Volastra or enjoy the breathtaking sea views from the Manarola promenade.

1. The main street of Manarola.  A walk along the main street of the village will lead you to small shops, cafes and restaurants where you can taste local specialties such as seafood pizza and fresh pastas;

2. Church of San Lorenzo (Chiesa di San Lorenzo). This 14th century church is the main religious building in Manarola. It has a beautiful facade and a great view of the village;

3. Panoramic route of Manarola. This route along the coast offers incredible views of the village and the sea. It is an ideal place for romantic walks at sunset.

Riomaggiore

Nestled between two hills, Riomaggiore looks like a bright garland decorated with small colored houses that are picturesquely located on the slopes. This village beckons with its narrow lanes where light and shadows play, creating unique visual effects. Particular attention should be paid to the houses that have been built since 1500 with two entrances facing the lower and upper streets, which allowed residents to quickly escape in case of a Saracen attack.

Riomaggiore is famous for its Via dell'Amore, which leads to Manarola. This path, carved into the rock, offers incredible scenery and the sounds of waves crashing on the rocks. You should definitely visit the local castle, go down to the waterfront for great photos and see the Church of John the Baptist.
