In July 2024, the Thailand government approved the new Destination Thailand Visa (DTV), which allows foreigners to travel and work in the country. On the basis of DTV, an expat can stay in Thailand for up to 180 days per entry, the visa itself is valid for 5 years.
In the first month of the permit, 47 Thai embassies and consulates issued about 1,200 DTV visas, and another 40 migration agencies have yet to report their data. However, it is already clear that the visa is in high demand among expats.

Which foreigners can apply for a Destination Thailand Visa (DTV)?
The DTV visa in Thailand is also known as the “digital nomad visa”, so this permit is best for freelancers, digital nomads or remote workers looking for an easy way to live and work in the tropical paradise of Thailand.
This permit can also be obtained by foreigners who plan to participate in the programs of the government initiative "Thai Soft Power" - attend Thai boxing or cooking classes, participate in sports training, undergo a course of treatment, take short-term training courses, participate in seminars or art workshops. or music festivals.
Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) at a Glance
- Validity period
DTV is a multiple-entry visa valid for 5 years. However, a foreigner can stay in the country for only 180 days per entry.
DTV can be extended once a year.
- Where to issue?
You can apply for the permit at the Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate or online through the official Thailand eVisa website.
You CANNOT apply for this visa while in Thailand. You will need to return to your country of residence and apply through a participating Thai embassy or consulate.
- Basic requirements and rules
The minimum age of a DTV visa applicant is 20 years.
It is also worth noting that the DTV is a special type of tourist visa in Thailand, which means that its holders are prohibited from obtaining a Thai work permit and working for companies in Thailand.
The cost of a DTV visa is 10,000 baht ($295).
Am I allowed to move to Thailand with my family on a DTV visa?
The DTV Visa allows family members of a foreign national to join primary DTV holders. There is no limit to the number of dependents you can bring to Thailand, but they must be either a spouse or a dependent child under the age of 20.
Each dependent must apply separately and pay a separate visa fee.
List of documents and requirements for expats to obtain a DTV visa?
Before submitting an application, a foreigner must prepare the following package of documents:
- Passport or travel document.
- Passport size photo.
- Information about the current place of residence.
- Confirmation of the availability of finances for obtaining a visa: generally the set amount is at least 500,000 baht (US$ 14,700), but the amount of assets may vary depending on the embassy or consulate where you will apply. Bank statements, payment statements or a sponsor letter can serve as proof.
- Confirmation of the grounds for obtaining a visa:
1. Workcation: employment contract, employment certificate from your country or professional portfolio showing your freelance work
2. Thai Soft Power: proof of participation in the event or letter of appointment from a hospital or medical center
3. Dependent of the primary DTV owner: proof of relationship, such as a marriage certificate, birth certificate or adoption certificate.

DTV visa extension in Thailand
Once you have a visa and are in Thailand, you can extend your stay for another 180 days, allowing you to stay in Thailand for almost a year without having to leave and return. For this, you will have to visit the immigration headquarters in Bangkok and apply for an extension. You will be charged a DTV extension fee of 10,000 baht ($295 USD).
The Thai authorities have introduced a new visa to further promote the country's economic growth. The Ministry of Tourism and Sports previously reported that Thailand recorded 28 million tourists last year. Most of them came from the following countries: Malaysia, China, South Korea, India and Russia.
