Sweden will pay $34,000 to migrants who decide to return home: what is known?
The Swedish government plans to pay foreigners grants for returning home. It is expected that the amount of payments will be $34,000. The first money can be received already in 2026. Find out what is currently known about this program
Sweden has announced a new voluntary repatriation scheme that offers foreigners up to $34,000 to return to their homeland. In this way, the country plans to change its approach to combating migration problems. In particular, the program, which should be launched in 2026, will be aimed at solving the ongoing problems of the integration of immigrants into Swedish society.
Financial assistance from Sweden in the amount of $34,000 for migrants who will return home
Immigrants will be paid grants of up to SEK 350,000 ($34,000) in exchange for returning to their country of origin. This initiative is a significant revision of the existing grant program. The Swedish government currently pays 10,000 kroner ($976) per adult and 5,000 kroner ($490) per child to return home. However, one family cannot receive more than 40,000 kroner ($3,900).
However, this offer is not at all popular among expats. Since 2023, only one migrant has used it.
The Swedish government expects that the new grant aid will be of greatest interest to expats who have not worked for a long time or are dependent on public assistance.
The Swedish government will announce more precise payment criteria and the procedure for receiving money later.
Why did Sweden decide to introduce such changes?
The new approach aims to provide a substantial financial cushion for immigrants who wish to repatriate, helping them rebuild their lives in their home countries. This policy will be a "change of strategies" in Sweden's migration policy. In this way, the country's government is trying to streamline the migration process and reduce the difficulties associated with the integration of foreigners.
Considering that Sweden is known as a "humanitarian superpower", it receives a lot of refugees, in particular in 2015 Sweden received 163,000 applications for asylum, which is the highest figure per capita in Europe, the problem of excessive migration is very acute in the country.

Reaction to the program
The response of the Swedes to the program for the payment of grants to expats is different. Many representatives of Swedish society have criticized this initiative, because they believe that such a policy will worsen Sweden's reputation as a humanitarian nation. Others say that the costs far outweigh the benefits.
Supporters of the plan emphasize that it is a voluntary program that allows immigrants to return home with significant financial support, rather than forcing people to leave the country.
What other countries offer expats money to return home?
A number of other European countries already have schemes that pay migrants to return home, including:
- in Germany you can get about $2,000
- in France – $2,800
- in Norway – $1,400
- in Denmark – $15,000.
Human rights activists are concerned about the impact of Sweden's new program on vulnerable populations, as people may experience and return to unstable countries. However, some see the grant as an opportunity to start a new life in their home country, while having a good financial security cushion.
