The procedure for obtaining work and study permits in Sweden has been simplified: details
Citizens of 23 countries no longer need to visit an embassy to obtain a work and study permit in Sweden. Find out more about what has changed and how to pass the passport check via the mobile application
Obtaining work and study permits in Sweden will become easier from now on, as the country is launching a pilot program for digital passport verification. Thanks to the innovation, citizens of 23 countries will not need to visit the embassy to go through this procedure.
Who can use the application and what is required for verification? We will find out further.
What will change for expats in Sweden with the introduction of digital passport verification?
Foreign students and professionals planning to move to Sweden can now use a mobile application to go through the passport verification process. While this option will be available to citizens of 23 countries of the world, however, the number of users is expected to grow.
The innovative system will simplify the permit application process, eliminating the need for potentially expensive and time-consuming trips to the Swedish embassy for passport verification.
How will the digital verification of the passport take place?
Digital passport verification is a process through which people will be able to verify their identity in a special mobile application.
How to do it?
1. Download the app.
2. Scan your passport.
3. Use facial recognition to verify your identity.
Importantly! Expats eligible for the pilot, including those who applied for a permit in 2024 but have not yet passed passport verification, will receive an automated email with a link to a secure online service. This link remains valid for one week, allowing applicants to conveniently check their passports online.
Who is eligible to participate in the pilot program?
The pilot program is expected to reach about 19,000 work permit applicants and 5,000 students annually.
Citizens of the following countries can participate: USA, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, Australia, Great Britain, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Chile, Singapore, Malaysia, North Macedonia, Georgia, Ukraine, Argentina, Colombia, Peru , Albania, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
These countries were chosen for testing because their citizens do not need a visa to visit Sweden.
The digital passport verification system was an important step towards a more efficient and convenient immigration process in Sweden. The developers say that the number of countries will increase in the future, so stay tuned.
