Germany continues to actively fight against illegal migration and cross-border crime. That is why, to protect national security, the country has implemented temporary internal border controls on all its land borders. The new rules came into effect on September 16, 2024. For now, it is planned that the inspections will last for 6 months. We talk about the new migration rules in Germany below.

Where will the new border control in Germany operate?

The new rules will apply at the land borders with Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, France, Denmark, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland and Switzerland. With these nine countries, Germany shares a common border with a length of more than 3,700 km.

It is worth noting that before the introduction of full border control, Germany already carried out certain checks at checkpoints with Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland and Switzerland.

How will the border control at the land borders of Germany take place?

The German authorities have announced a random inspection of vehicles as part of border control.

According to German Interior Minister Nancy Faser, police will carry out checks based on current security needs. The review procedure will be flexible and adapted to the situation on the ground. The country's authorities also assured that inspections would be coordinated with Germany's neighboring countries to minimize disruption.

New rules for travelers

Given that Germany has introduced border checks, which are also aimed at combating illegal migration, travelers should keep the following important points in mind:

- Carry identification – all travelers must have a valid ID when crossing the border.

- Plan your trip in advance - take into account possible delays due to border checks.

- Stay in the know – check the latest travel advice before you go to ensure a smooth trip.

Why did Germany decide to introduce border controls?

A recent surge in extremist attacks has heightened security concerns across Germany, prompting the government to take such measures. The checks are especially important now that the country is recording a large number of threats from Islamist terrorist groups. In particular, last month there was a knife attack in Solingen, during which three people were killed.

The suspect, who was linked to the Islamic State group, avoided deportation, sparking a public outcry and heightened political debate.

How did neighboring countries react to increased security measures in Germany?

Germany's decision to strengthen border control outraged its two neighbors - Poland and Austria. Countries have expressed reservations about Germany's decision.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk called it "unacceptable".

Austrian Interior Minister Gerhard Karner added that Austria will not accept migrants whom Germany will not let into its territory.

How will border controls in Germany affect travelers?

The German government is certainly committed to minimizing the impact on people, but citizens living and working in border regions and travelers are advised to carry proper identification when crossing the border and to be aware of possible delays.

Enhanced border controls in Germany are expected to last for 6 months, until March 15, 2025.

We will remind you! Every year in Munich at the end of September, the biggest beer festival "Oktoberfest" is held, which is visited by more than 6 million tourists. We talked about the schedule and program of the Oktoberfest festival in 2024 earlier.
