Cost of living in China: expenses for housing rent, food, transport and monthly budget

China is a high-tech country that is developing rapidly. Therefore, the number of people wishing to move to China is increasing every year. Is it expensive to live in China?
China ranks 138th in the world among 197 countries in terms of the cost of living, and it is also the 83rd best country to live in, as it offers a balance between affordability and quality of life.
The cost of living in China varies significantly between different regions, reflecting the economic diversity of the country. Urban centers such as Shanghai and Beijing have a higher cost of living than rural areas. For a family of four, the estimated monthly rent-free expenses average around $2016, while the estimated monthly expenses for a single person are around $556.8.
Real Estate Rental Prices in China
While Suzhou has the highest overall cost of living in China, housing costs are highest in Shanghai, with prices in Beijing also slightly lower. It is worth noting that rent in these popular cities is significantly more expensive than in most other cities in the country. However, housing rent in China is on average more than 60% lower than in New York.
Rent for a one-bedroom apartment in downtown Shanghai ranges from $1,025 to $1,252; outside the city center from $537 to $656. If you decide to stay in the center of Beijing, expect to pay between $1,060 and $1,295 for a one-bedroom apartment, and $581-$710 outside the city center. In Hangzhou, prices are much lower, with rent for a one-bedroom apartment ranging from $491 to $600; outside the city center from $302 to $370.
Utility costs in China
Tenants typically pay utility and housing costs in addition to the rent, which may not be included in the rental price. Depending on the amenities of the apartment, these costs usually include water, electricity, heating, and sometimes gas.
Utilities: Basic (electricity, heating, cooling, water, garbage) for an 85 m² apartment costs between $54 and $66.
As for internet and communication services, residents can expect to pay around $14 per month for a mobile phone plan, which usually includes a data package. Internet (60 Mbps or more, unlimited data, cable/ADSL) – $21 to $26.
Food Prices in China
Cooking at home is affordable and a chance to experiment with Chinese cuisine. White rice is a staple of the Chinese diet, and 500g will cost only $0.43–$0.53. Eggs are another staple, a dozen will cost from $1.80 to $2.20. Dairy products are exceptionally cheap in China, with 1 liter of milk costing around $2.4, and 500g of local cheese – from $5.55 to $6.75.

Cost of Eating Out and Entertainment in China
Eating out is common in China, and tipping is not part of the culture. Good food is available everywhere, from cheap street food to fine dining. You’ll spend more in the big international cities of Shanghai and Beijing. On average, a three-course meal for two at a mid-range restaurant in Shanghai will cost you between $39 and $48. Other cities fall within the national average of $27 to $33. On average, a meal at a budget restaurant will cost just $4 to $5.
The prices for entertainment are as follows: massage (30 minutes) – $14, fitness club membership for 1 month – $140. Movie ticket – $9.
Cost of transport in China
A high-speed rail ticket from Beijing to Hong Kong costs around $140 to $175. Passengers should book their tickets in advance, especially if traveling during holidays, such as the Lunar New Year.
A one-way ticket on local public transportation costs an average of just $0.40-$0.48. A monthly pass costs between $24 and $30 and includes buses in major cities. Transportation costs in Shanghai and Beijing are higher than the national average.
Taxis are also available in most cities. On average, a taxi costs between $0.53 and $0.65 per kilometer, plus an initial fee of $1.60 to $2.00.
Cost of Education in China
A year of international primary schooling for one child can cost between $20,029 and $24,480 on average. If you are moving to China with very young children, be prepared to pay for preschool and kindergarten. A full-day private preschool or kindergarten can cost from $549 to $671 per month for one child. International private schools are more common in large cities popular with expats.
