There are many factors to consider before choosing a country to move to permanently. However, one of the main aspects of moving is the cost of living.

For those looking for an affordable country to live in with good weather and plenty of delicious food, Malaysia is a great option. That is why Malaysia is becoming an increasingly popular destination for digital nomads, retirees, travelers and other categories of expats from various countries, including citizens of the Philippines, Iran and Turkmenistan.

We will tell you about prices in Malaysia in 2025 below.

Is it expensive to live in Malaysia?

According to the 2023 Cost of Living Cities Ranking, compiled by consulting company Mercer, the capital of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, ranks 180th out of 227 cities in the world.

The cost of living in Malaysia is generally lower than in many Western countries, making it an attractive destination for expats and retirees. While cities like Kuala Lumpur can be more expensive, especially in terms of housing costs, they still offer good value for money compared to major cities in developed countries.

A family of two should expect to spend around $1,300 per month living in major cities in Malaysia. This includes expenses such as rent, utilities, food and some entertainment. For those living in smaller towns or rural areas, the costs will be lower.

Rental Prices in Malaysia

One of the advantages of moving to Malaysia is the affordable housing. If you are an expat looking for a two-bedroom apartment in an upmarket area close to work, monthly rent can be as high as RM4,406 ($980) or more, while housing in other areas can be found for half that price.

The average monthly rent ranges from 1,346 to 4,406 ringgit (300 to 980 USD) depending on the location.

Utility costs in Malaysia

Depending on the region you live in, utility costs can vary. Utilities such as internet, mobile, gas, electricity, TV and heating usually cost no more than 400 Malaysian ringgit (90 USD) even in upscale areas:

- Electricity: around 20 USD per month, depending on usage.

- Water: around 10 USD per month.

- Internet/WIFI: usually around 25 USD per month.

- Mobile plan: you can expect to pay around 8 USD per month.
