How was the European Best Destinations 2026 ranking compiled?

The ranking of the best destinations in Europe is formed in two stages. First, a team of tourism experts analyzes more than 500 locations across the continent according to a number of criteria: tourism flow dynamics, number of online requests, popularity on social networks, as well as the destination's commitment to the principles of sustainable development, accessibility, and support for local communities. Based on the results of this analysis, 20 finalists are selected.

The second stage is an open vote by travelers from around the world. It is their votes that determine the final place of each destination in the ranking. In 2026, more than 1.3 million people from 154 countries took part in the vote, and Madrid received the most support. This result reflects a broader trend in European tourism: travelers are increasingly choosing cities with a strong identity, high quality of life, and rich cultural offerings.

Cultural life in Madrid: museums, art, and flamenco

Madrid has one of the most powerful museum infrastructures in Europe. The heart of the city's cultural space is the so-called “Golden Triangle of Art,” listed by UNESCO. It brings together three world-famous museums — the Prado, Reina Sofia, and Thyssen-Bornemisza — in a single urban corridor that combines art, architecture, and park areas. This concentration of outstanding collections in one neighborhood makes Madrid a must-see for lovers of painting and sculpture.

At the same time, the cultural palette of the Spanish capital extends far beyond the classical museums. Former industrial areas, such as Carabanchel, have undergone a real reboot — today they are home to experimental galleries, design studios, and contemporary art spaces. Flamenco tablaos play a special role in cultural life. These traditional chamber performances remain a living expression of Spanish identity and continue to attract both locals and visitors to the city.

Gastronomy and street life in the Spanish capital

Madrid is one of the gastronomic capitals of the continent, where avant-garde cuisine coexists organically with historic taverns that have been operating for generations. The city's restaurant scene covers the entire spectrum, from Michelin-starred establishments to authentic tapas bars in the old quarters. It is this diversity that makes a culinary journey through Madrid interesting for travelers with different budgets and tastes.

A particular advantage of the city is its climate: over 3,000 hours of sunshine a year allow you to enjoy the street lifestyle almost all year round. Elegant boulevards, lively squares, terrace culture, and rooftop parties all contribute to an atmosphere where days flow smoothly into long, warm evenings. The large Retiro Park, green areas, and pedestrian streets complete the picture of a city that is made for walking and leisurely relaxation.

Sustainable development and Madrid's convenience for tourists

Madrid is actively investing in green infrastructure and the comfort of the urban environment. In recent years, the capital has expanded its park areas, increased the number of pedestrian zones, and improved its public transport system, which is considered one of the most efficient in Europe. These steps confirm the city's long-term strategy aimed at sustainable tourism and improving the quality of life for both locals and visitors.

Almudena Maylo, Madrid City Council's tourism advisor, noted that being named the best European destination for 2026 puts the city at the center of the continent's tourism dialogue. According to her, Madrid strives to continue welcoming guests from all over the world, while ensuring that tourism has a positive impact on the city's development, identity, and prosperity.
