How were the world’s most vibrant cities determined in 2026?

To compile the ranking, experts from the insurance company JustCover analyzed dozens of popular tourist destinations around the world. The study included about 80 cities known for their visual appeal and color palette.

The methodology was based not on subjective assessments, but on an analysis of real images of each location. To do this, the team selected representative photographs of the cities that best reflect their typical appearance.

Specifically, the analysis included:

- Aerial photos and city panoramas;

- Horizon views;

- Street photos featuring architecture and recognizable landmarks;

- Images of popular tourist areas.

All photographs were selected according to the same criteria: they had to be taken in bright daylight and without the use of strong filters to convey the actual colors of the area as accurately as possible.

Afterward, experts used a special color analysis tool that determined the number of unique shades in each image. The data was processed at the pixel level, and the results for each city were combined to form the final brightness score.

In addition to Lisbon, four other locations from different parts of the world made it into the top five most vibrant cities in the world in 2026. Each has a unique visual identity that shapes a vibrant urban landscape.

Kuala Lumpur took second place. This city stands out for the contrast between ultra-modern skyscrapers and traditional temples. It is the combination of glass, metal, and vibrant cultural elements that creates a strong visual impact.

In third place is Porto. The city is known for its colorful houses along the Douro River, terracotta roofs, and atmospheric historic neighborhoods. Narrow streets and ancient architecture add visual depth.

Cartagena took fourth place—one of the most vibrant colonial cities in Latin America. Its hallmarks are colorful facades and the famous yellow Clock Tower at the entrance to the Old City.

Rounding out the top five is Rio de Janeiro, where over 2.3 million colors were counted. One of the most famous landmarks is the Selaron Steps, adorned with tiles in bright shades of yellow, blue, and green, which have long been a symbol of the city.
