Visa to Portugal: who needs it and how to get it

Before you plan your trip, make sure you know whether you need a Schengen visa for Portugal and how to get it.

You do not need a visa to visit Portugal if:

1. You are a citizen or a family member of an EU/EEA/Swiss citizen.

2. You are a citizen of a country that has a visa-free regime with the Schengen area.

Citizens of other countries need to obtain a visa to enter Portugal.

To find out more about whether you need a visa to Portugal, how to get one, or how long you can stay in the country without a visa, depending on your citizenship, use the search engine on the page by entering your citizenship.

In order to visit Portugal for tourist/business purposes, visit relatives, attend a conference or undergo a medical examination, you should apply for a short-stay visa type C.

The visa allows you to stay in Portugal for up to 90 days within a period of 180 days. In addition, you can visit other Schengen countries within the validity period of the visa.

To apply for a visa to Portugal, follow these steps:

1. Find the address of the nearest Portuguese embassy/consulate in your country of residence and make an appointment.

2. Fill out the visa application form (download the visa application form here, fill it out, print it out and sign it).

3. Collect the required package of documents together with the completed visa application form and submit them to the Portuguese Embassy. Depending on where you live, you may have to submit the documents to the Portuguese embassy, consulate or visa center or you can send them by mail.

4. Pay the visa fee. This can be done directly at the Portuguese embassy/consulate when you apply. Don't forget to include your payment receipt with the rest of your documents.

5. Wait for your visa to be processed. It usually takes about 15 days, but it may take longer depending on your situation.

Documents required for a short-stay visa to Portugal

- A valid passport

- Two passport-size photos

- A completed visa application form

- Travel insurance policy. The insurance must have a minimum coverage of 30,000 euros in case you have health problems during your stay in Portugal.

- Receipt of payment of the visa fee

- A cover letter for a visa to Portugal. It should detail the reason for travel, arrival and departure dates if you are traveling to another Schengen country, your planned activities, etc.

- Proof of accommodation in Portugal (rental agreement, hotel reservation, letter of invitation from a friend or family member)

- Bank statements (for the last 6 months, confirming your financial stability and ability to support yourself financially during your stay in Portugal)

- Booked round-trip tickets

If your visa application for Portugal is rejected, you have several options:

Write a letter of appeal to the embassy/consulate that denied your visa. The deadline for submitting an appeal letter is 15 days after receiving the visa refusal decision.

Reapplying. You can re-apply for the same visa to Portugal.

Applying for a Schengen visa in another Schengen country. If you are issued a Schengen visa in another Schengen country, you will be able to visit Portugal without an additional visa.

The reasons for visa refusal can be different: false information when filling out the application form, lack of documents, being late for the visa appointment, invalid or damaged passport, lack of travel insurance or unconfirmed financial solvency.

Once you have received your visa, it is important to remember that it can be canceled at any time if you do not notify us of any changes in your travel itinerary.
