Saint-Malo, Brittany: A Port City with Granite Walls and Golden Beaches
Saint-Malo is a coastal port city in the Brittany region of northwestern France. The Old Town is surrounded by massive granite walls, and the main beach area—Plage du Sillon—features a wide strip of golden sand, impressive tides, and panoramic views of the fortress.

Summer temperatures range from 20–25°C, making Saint-Malo a comfortable alternative to the sweltering Mediterranean. In addition to beach vacations, the city offers:
- boutique hotels in the historic district;
- authentic Breton crêperies serving local cuisine;
- convenient access to nearby destinations—Cancale, Dinard, and the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel.
Brittany as a whole remains one of the least “overhyped” coastal regions in France among tourists, and Saint-Malo is its most convenient gateway.

Bel-Île: the island in Brittany that locals keep quiet about
Bel-Île is the largest island off the coast of Brittany, maintaining its reputation as a hidden gem thanks to its relative remoteness. It features deserted beaches, sea cliffs, and port towns with colorful facades and fishing boats.
Getting to the island requires some effort. Most travelers first head to the town of Quiberon on the mainland, and from there take a ferry to the port of Le Palet. The crossing takes about an hour. It is precisely this logistical hurdle that keeps mass tourism at bay and preserves the island’s relative tranquility.
Belle-Île is ideal for those seeking an adventure-filled vacation—with hiking trails along the cliffs, exploring hidden coves, and leisurely dinners at harbor restaurants.

Honfleur, Normandy: A Beach Getaway Just a Couple of Hours from Paris
Normandy is known primarily for its D-Day landing beaches and World War II memorials, but the region is also a convenient destination for a summer getaway—especially for those staying in Paris.

Honfleur is the closest of the Normandy coastal towns to the capital and is even suitable for a day trip. The town is known for its half-timbered architecture, a waterfront lined with colorful facades, and Plage du Butin, which visitors praise for its cleanliness and picturesque walking path along the Seine River.
Honfleur combines a coastal atmosphere with architectural heritage, so there’s plenty to do here beyond the beach.

Deauville: A Resort Town on the Normandy Coast
Deauville is located not far from Honfleur and is just as easily accessible from Paris. Among the four destinations in this selection, it is the most visited, though it is still significantly less crowded than the French Riviera.
The town is known for its well-maintained beaches with their distinctive striped umbrellas—according to various estimates, there are about 450 of them here. Hotels and restaurants line the coastline. In the summer, it’s best to arrive at the beach early, as spots under the umbrellas fill up quickly.
Doville is best suited for those who want to combine a beach vacation with well-developed infrastructure, but without the crowds of the Riviera.
