Slovakia is updating its immigration rules from July 15, 2026. Find out what changes await foreign workers, students and entrepreneurs planning to move or reside in the country
Slovakia is switching to an updated immigration model from July 15, 2026, which will affect almost all foreigners - from employees to students and business owners. The reform package has been in preparation for more than one month and affects several areas at once: the duration of a national visa, the procedure for finding a new job after dismissal, the processing of visa applications and even the format of a residence permit. Some of the changes clearly make life easier for those planning to move, while others, on the contrary, add bureaucracy and shorten the time to correct errors in documents.

The national visa of Slovakia is extended to 120 days
The main news concerns the validity period of the national visa - it has been increased from 90 to 120 days. This visa is issued to those who enter the country specifically to submit documents for a residence permit, including for work purposes.
The difference in a month may seem like a trifle, but in practice it relieves a lot of stress: if the move or paperwork is delayed - due to logistics, a queue at the consulate or any other circumstances - the time reserve is now greater, and the risk of "not having time" is correspondingly lower.

More time to find a new job after dismissal
Another change works in favor of foreign workers who have lost their jobs. Previously, the period for finding a new place was stricter, now it is differentiated depending on the length of stay:
- If the residence permit is valid for less than two years - three months are given to find a new job;
- If more than two years - the period is extended to six months.
At the same time, the obligation to notify the authorities about dismissal and the start of a new job does not disappear anywhere - it remains with the person. In general, Slovakia is following the same path as a number of other European countries: if a few years ago the main focus was on attracting foreign specialists, now states are increasingly thinking about how to keep already employed people without forcing them to leave due to temporary job loss.

Visa applications will be processed centrally
Until July 15, visa applications were considered by consulates, and the terms could differ significantly depending on where the person applied. Now this is changing: a single Central Visa Authority is being created, which will work in coordination with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and will make decisions on all visa applications.
The stated benchmark is consideration within 40 days. How stable this will work in practice will be shown by the first year of operation of the new system, but the very idea of a single processing center should eliminate the main problem of the previous model - the unpredictability of deadlines.
Business permits will be checked more strictly
Entrepreneurs who apply for a residence permit through business should prepare in advance. The authorities will now be interested not in formal registration, but in real economic activity: whether the company is really working, whether it creates added value, and whether it operates legally.
The requirement for tax and insurance cleanliness is also changing - previously it was checked at the application stage, now the absence of debts must be confirmed throughout the validity period of the permit.

Digital residence card – but not from July 15
One point is worth clarifying separately, because in the information space it is often presented as if it were part of the July package. In fact, the ability to issue a digital version of the residence card through the eDoklady application (App Store | Google Play) will come into effect later – from October 1, 2026. At the same time, the digital copy does not completely replace the physical document: at the border and in certain procedures related to the stay of foreigners, it will still be necessary to present a plastic card.
In parallel, another practice is ending – the automatic extension of residence permits without additional applications, which was once introduced as a temporary anti-crisis measure. With the entry into force of the new rules, this norm is canceled, so the documents will have to be extended according to the usual procedure.
Students and applicants for a work permit – be more careful with deadlines
Not all changes are in favor of applicants. The processing time for applications for residence permits for study is being extended from 30 to 90 days, so students preparing to enter Slovak universities should apply much earlier than they are used to.
The procedure for work permits is also becoming stricter: if the application is missing documents, they are given only 15 days to submit them. Previously, this period could reach 90 days depending on the situation. After July 15, missing even a small deadline will mean a refusal - and you will have to apply again.
Other adjustments include simplified requirements for confirming residence for certain categories of applicants and an extended period of validity of residence cards for EU citizens.

In general, the reform looks like an attempt at a balance: where it comes to flexibility for people who are already employed, the rules are relaxed, and where it comes to control and verification, on the contrary, they are becoming stricter. For those planning to move to Slovakia in the near future, the main practical conclusion is one: plan more time to prepare documents and submit applications with a margin, without waiting for the last week before the deadline.
The new rules in Slovakia have made the process of obtaining a residence permit even more sensitive to deadlines: if previously up to 90 days were given for submitting documents, now only 15 days remain. In such a situation, it is especially important to know in advance the full list of papers, requirements and criteria, so as not to collect them in a hurry at the last moment.
